I have really been thinking of Jeeps lately. I really want to get into over-landing/softroading. My dad’s already registered for some overland BC stuff. If I got into it, it would be something we could do together and provide some chances at camping for my wife and I.
Can the Jeep experts of Oppo tell me what years to look at/avoid? Any mileage I should look to avoid?
This is still at the “fantasy” stage, but.... you never know. I just want to know where to focus my fantasy.
Realistic budget: $20-$ 25 K Canadian. On a loan, obviously.

Look for a later TJ with the 4.0.
Get under and check the frame for rust, and the front fenders.
The Sahara were well equipped and had the 4.10 gear ratio I believe.

Sounds good. I still am thinking of a JK, yeah.

I’ve always felt like Jeeps were good trucks for “ wheeling” for a day or so. I think that most Wranglers are a bit too small (cargo-wise) for truly “overlanding” plus having to install a roof rack/bar cage over your soft/hard roof, which sits over your factory roll cage takes up a ton of space and seems way complicated. TLDR, I think there’s a lot of good reasons that most Wranglers are built for day trips and most people opt for a midsize pickup or wagon SUV for overlanding.

hmmm.
I mean, I’d be open to it I guess. What about a Taco? I’d be more into that.

If you were looking to get out but not pay a premium look at extended cab tacos.
Otherwise 4th Gen 4runners are you best bet. Addison’s V8 Rickrunner started out with a 10k limited in Vancouver;

Perhaps get a friend for your truck like this:
and put on a rack like this:
Or a Ramcharger?

Why not get a CJ7? You can find an extremely nice one for that price, and it will hold its value since it is a classic.

I’ve read the comments and am ready for the potential flames. Keeping in mind I currently own and am working on an 88’ AMC Eagle Station Wagon with a modified 4.2L (same block as a 4.0 TJ) and loved the engine before modifying it, just hated the carb setup. And that I grew up l earning to drive and off-road in 4Runners. I still love the older models.
Opinion. Here we go...
I had an 07’ JK. 2 door, “X” model. No power anything, crappy gear ratio, softop, totally open diffs, a Dana 30 front and 44 rear (should have had a 35... yes I know, ewww, but they ran out so my build got a 44). My JK running a 2” suspension lift and 35x12.5 BFG KM2 tires and 2” wheel spacers with those same debilitating gears ran circles around YJ’s and TJ’s and XJ’s that had the same size tires AND both front and rear lockers. And most of those Jeeps went places that the 4Runners had absolutely no chance at ever clearing the ruts and mud holes. The Pentastar isn’t the most glorious engine by a long shot. But in 4LO the engine would spin those huge tires right up just about anything. And that was the X model. I can’t even imagine if I had the better geared Rubicon with lockers front and rear. Basically unstoppable. I have a friend with a 2013 4Runner. Really nice on the highway, real useless in the bush. It hangs up on everything. My Wife’s Juke has better clearance. I’ve driven both in mild off-road and the car does a better job
I’m not a Jeep fanboy, but I’ll admit they’ve got a better off-road machine than most. If you could get a newer JK Rubicon and do a 5.7 or 6.0L swap and migrate the 44 axle assemblies to Dana 60’s with skid plates you’d have the dream machine. Even just skidplate the Rubicon and you’re way ahead of the pack for terrain accessible to you
The overlander tent setup can be a bit awkward with the whole frame thing. But I think it’d be worth it. Only other comparison is to start with a truck that has 4LO , and do a good suspension lift (no leafs, shocks and coils) and get at least a rear locker. The generally much larger engines will compensate for being so much longer of a wheelbase.
This is all based off of shenanigans I’ve seen and driven in the trees and mountains.

Damn, I’ve been looking for a terrible picture of one to post and now I want one. I also didn’t realize they built them for 22 years!

I’ve been camping out of my ‘11 two door Wrangler for a few years. I have two kids, a wife and a dog. Space it a bit tight, but I’ve done entire western camping roadtrips with all of them with no issue. I’m talking 4k miles, multi week trips with us camping in a tent for as many as five days straight. Camped probably every other weekend for the first year I had it. However, I got into the outdoors through backpacking in the desert, where you have to carry the least amount of stuff as possible in order to save weight for water, so my idea of what you “need” to camp is a little skewed from most other people.
Mine is a manual with the old 3.8L. The engine is a freaking dog, but I haven’t had any issues with it in the 50k or so miles I’ve put on it. However, it has less than 80k on it total, so that’s not saying much. The quality of everything itls total crap, and a lot of trim pieces and little plastics knicknacks have broken, including the grommet that holds the transfer case shifter onto the linkage. However, the JKs are built like legos, and are extremely easy to work on and fix. With the roof off, the manual makes the truck actually fun to drive. Gives it a lifted go cart feel.
All that said, I bought mine because it was $17k with a manual, hardtop and only 30k or so miles on it. Had I been able to find a 4runner for that price and mileage, I would have bought it instead.

As much as I love my Wrangler, when it comes to overlanding I keep thinking about a Commander. More space and a hard top is very appealing.
(Yes, I have more space than Skychismo, and a hard top just sitting in my yard collecting grime, but swapping tops is harder than pulling out a different set of keys.)

Yes, but I figured there’d be plenty of other comments about that. I was trying to say something positive without the usual jeep comments!
