I own an expensive Escort -the 360. It is almost 4 years old and I hate it. I will be honest. This is my second Escort, and I think their products are shit. I mean, they work, but I think they are poorly built. I just had to order a new power cord. The janky one that came with it gave up the ghost.

Anybody have a radar detector they like? What do you like about it?

I have no advice as the peoples republic of Virginia bans their operation and I have never been motivated to drive purchase one when travelling outside the commonwealth.

I just wanted to say I appreciate the Buford T. Justice clip.

This guy looks trust worthy. I remember these ads in Road and track back in the 80's!

I have an Escort Passsport 9500ix which has great range on the highway but lots of false K band alerts in the city, works really well at detection though. It’s 4 years old.

I am planning to upgrade to Uniden R3 next year when they have any god deals going on.Been researching it for a while, It has received excellent reviews:

I’ve got a V alentine one in the M3. It was my high school graduation gift from my father, haha. That was 15 years ago and I have had updated/traded up a few times through Valentine one. It really depends on the state that you’re in and the equipment they use.

In my home state of PA they don’t use radar. I think the use mostly laser and VASCAR. My dad got it for me because I was headed to college in Vermont and he knows me so he knew I needed it. It did basically nothing in PA and NJ except detect laser when it was already too late haha. In NY and VT however it was great! I’d get nearly a miles notice for any troopers.

Waze is honestly better than a radar detector these days. I have the Valentine one hared wired into the M3, but it lives in the glove box these days.

I usually just use Waze when out of places that I know well.

I have the Escort model with GPS (the original one) and haven’t plugged it in n a few years. I wanted it mainly for the red light camera alerts but you need to update it and that costs.

I honestly think that driving with Waze is just as if not more effective than the spotty results with radar detectors. Most traps locally are laser, as such you are normally popped already if you get the alert. I’ve also owned Passport and V1 to similar results.

I have a passport max, also from 2014, and I’ve had no issues at all with it.

Radenso Pro-M — i use this in my C63. A few other AMG members i know also know use them or Valentine One. What is nice about the Radenso is the false positive filter. It has one of the best so i rarely hear any alerts due to proximity sensors on other cars or stores . You can also GPS lockout an area - which locks onto the specific type\strength\gps location of that specific alert.   However if you are in an existing lockout zone - and the signal changes either in type\strength it will still alert. Which is good incase you are in a lockout area and then a cop sits in that area .

RDforums: https://www.rdforum.org/index.php Always has great info. They have a geographical survey with States\Counties listed and what radar technologies are used in that location. Which can be found here: https://www.rdforum.org/index.php?threads/59672/

I have one, it’s about as good as any other I have used but Waze beats them all these days

From my experience radar detectors do 3 things:

1) Give a false sense of security

2) Give false alerts

3) Let you know that you’re about to get pulled over

You’re better off putting the cash into a trackday fund to help get your speed fix , and driving slower on the roads.

Have you found it useful for bombing around in the desert up there? Seems like the V1 has always been the tried and true method for radar detectors. But I have never looked into a radar detector mostly because it seems that keeping speeds around 80 or less keeps you out of much risk really. I’ve always thought about getting one though just because it seems like some cheap potential insurance. How does CHP feel about detectors in general anyways?

I thought the V1 was the best ever, even though I’ve never tried one. I don’t use a detector any more.

I have a buddy at work that swears by Escorts, (he is a left lane guy - currently has an SHO and a stage 2 Roush Mustang.)  Though personally I have never used one - leaning towards Nermal’s response below, plus a #4 - you have to mount them high enough on the windshield so police can see you are using them... but admit I’m a 7-8 over the limit kinda guy...

I live in a small town with a lot of speed traps and rolling radar. Getting a radar detector helps you realize how many cops are out there.

My Valentine V1 is excellent in my SI. I put the visor clip on backward and stick it under the leading lip of the headliner over the rear view mirror. I once had somebody break into the car and they never noticed it up there. I then use the remote control plugged into the socket next to the shifter. It uses standard phone jack/cable for easy routing through the dash and windshield surround for connection.

This setup allows easy access to the mute button when it goes off, with the bonus that the cop behind you does not see the lit up display from the rear.

I do mostly highway driving, and my Valentine One has served me well.  I like the direction and signal strength indications, and the interface on the app (with bluetooth adapter) will give you even more information if you want it.
