!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! , obviously the effects will go far beyond the thousands of jobs suddenly axed as of the end of 2019. Does Oppo believe that we are approaching a new era of the automotive world? How do you feel the future looks for us?
I worry for my future as a Jalop. Performance cars are becoming increasingly scarce, manuals are nearing extinction and most worryingly for me, people who have knowledge/skills to fix my truck are retiring/dying every day and not being replaced .
How do you feel about our subscription based, ride sharing, electric future?

At what point does GM get another bail out? Three years from now or less?

If anything, aggressively shedding unneeded plants and workers makes a bailout less likely.

So, I’ve never been much for keeping an eye on the boring business side of things. Is this a move to prevent imminent bankruptcy, or just another example of a large company ruthlessly doing whatever it takes to maximize profits? Barra’s flowery quote in that article makes it sound like the latter.

Every car is a performance car now! Every new car is a luxury car!
I’m more concerned about the loss of ****GOOD**** jobs. We are still in a DEPRESSION, and the “recovery” is a myth because most new jobs are low-paying shit with no benefits.

From what I gather, basically just a continuation of “Car- po calypse”. Killing off anything that isn’t an SUV/Truck and investing the savings in EV.

I guess my decision at the end of the day to buy my F30 was a right one. 2 manual cars, run them both to the ground or gasoline cars are banned, whichever comes first.

100% in favor. It needs to happen. I’ve been explaining this to my non car obsessed friends for months and each time, they look at me like I’m an insane person.

From what I understand GM is in a very favorable position as a company. Compared to Ford they are killing it! This is likely a move for profits and cost reduction, ive seen articles about Oshawa possibly being closed for a couple years now, so it’s not a great surprise.

It sucks for all of the people losing their jobs. As for the consumer side, remember that the average age of cars on the road is what, 7 years? So it’s not like you’ll be forced to buy a crossover tomorrow. If more and more people want crossovers, that means that at least for a little while you can live off of their trade ins. And my mechanic is younger than me so I’m not worried about that part. As long as people are driving cars, someone will make money off of fixing them.

All that can fuck right off. Subscription/taxi’s are not a good idea and will die. I’m not upset about electric honestly. Sub ten minute charges with 300+ range will be fine for me. More gas stations with high capacity chargers is a must.

I think that all facets of both personal and commercial transportation are going to change drastically over the next 5-10 yrs.
Honestly it’s started already, with the rise of things like Uber & Lyft, as well as short term scooter rentals. Owning a car is becoming less important, especially if you are a city dweller. You also have things like Amazon impacting the need for personal transportation.
Buying a car is changing, for those that still feel the need for one . I think online, made to order, manufacturer direct sales (aka Tesla style) will become more mainstream. The traditional dealership sales model will go by the wayside, and good riddance.

Not that I agree with what they are doing, but you don’t take cost cutting measures when things are bad. If you’re taking cost cutting measures when s*** hits the fan than it’s already too late. GM is a massive company and it’ s takes a lot of time to pivot a behemoth . This is likely a reaction to an unfavorable forecast model in the future.

Good jobs being lost isn’t a result of this reco very. Automation has been killing these jobs for decades.

People are purely delusional if they don’t think a large contributor to this is the trade war. Making cars you can’t export at a profit because of retaliatory tariffs is not good business.

Time for facts: US automakers suck at making good, affordable economy cars that last. Focii and Fiestas have grenading transmissions and rattle apart , GM has gone through more entry level models than [metaphor goes here], and Chysler/Dodge doesn’t even SELL a small car anymore.
Kia/Honda/Yota have been attempting to up their sedan game and will gobble up the remaining market.
In general, I may worry about the future of cars , but when I hear about factories closing down, I just shrug because we just watched US automakers eat shit one decade ago.

The car future is very good, the closing of these plants and 15% layoffs is a bit ominous though. It’s just an evolution of the car as time goes on.
The US is m
ost likely going into a recession 2019-2020. Once again housing is overvalued, the stock market is overvalued,
and credit has been lent to dumb asses for cars and homes they cannot afford. GM just saw this coming and is preparing for a significant downturn.

I don’t understand your mindset. In what world does continuing to make unprofitable and slow selling cars make good business sense?
They’re not going to go bankrupt again just because you’re mad at them for getting rid of cars you weren’t buying anyway.

It’s all about availablity. If you only have EVs to play with, then that’s what you’ll mod. And eventually there will be a generation that doesn’t even know what a V8 is... but that’s still a bit of a ways off.

As much as it sucks, it also makes perfect sense. Kill off low profit models, focus on your profitable ones and invest in development of EVs. It’s how they need to survive.

What i feel is going to happen is what played out in the mid 70s and 80s. The 50s, 60s, and early 70s were seen as a golden era of american car engineering. But had to drive the slop they called cars in the Malaise era
We are going to be hung up on cars from the 90s, 00s and 10s as the performance era. While for the next couple decades everyone is driving an SUV

The automotive industry is what is considered a “mature” market. The margins on cars are dropping and as a result everyone is basically bleeding to death. You are going to likely see the death of several major brands internationally. We will probably be left with only 3 or 4 major brands. The luxury guys should be ok.

I think we’ll be like the people last century that still kept horses as a hobby . Cars will eventually be a hobby with a rich tradition, but not transportation.

It blows my mind that this depression isn’t in the media constantly. Our labor participation rate is lower today than it was 40 years ago. Of those employed in any way, a huge fraction are casual/temporary/contractors/low-wage service. It has been on a long term declining trend since 2006.

People (baby boomers es pecially) look around and think today is the way things have always been. They forget 150 most worked on farms and over a couple gene rations that rapidly shifted to manufacturing, to the 1980s when robot removed that occupation.
You just have to look at how highways allowed the suburbs to explode and lead to massive social economic changes.
think 20 years ago: apple was approaching bankruptcy and is now the 3rd most valuable company and kodak was inventing the digital cameral and now gone.

The phenomenon you are referring to happens with every generation of people and products. The same said of “old” film cameras can be said of VCRs, typewriters , cassettes, and other old people stuff.
There will always be requirements for fulfilling basic needs (food / housing / transportation / etc), but how we get there will evolve. I think that over time the delta between urban / suburban / rural populations will continue to grow, especially regarding transportation.
