There was quite a bit of mocking when Ford said it was giving up on cars. Now GM is shuttering multiple plants that build cars.
This is happening roughly the same time frame as Ford’s decision, in the 2019 MY. Is FCA going to give up on cars too? The 300/Charger/Challenger are riding on old ancient platforms. Jeep is driving the profits.
Was Ford just ahead of GM? Is FCA next? What happens to Chrysler if the 300 goes away?

From what I’ve read Chrysler 300 will be discontinued after 2020
The Dodge Charger will soldier on, move to a new Alfa based platform after 2020. https://www.automobilemag.com/news/ram-mid-size-pickup-in-21-no-giorgio-for-dodge-chargerchallenger/
So, the Charger will remain the last(only?) mainstream RWD large sedan in America.

Shutter Chyrsler entirely...the brand is a waste

If you don’t count the 5 or 7 series. The MB E, S Class. The Hydunai K90000000 - if it still on sale. I think Lexus has a large RWD sedan as well.
Last affordable one maybe, but not the last.

I think that oil prices are going to skyrocket at some point in the next 10 yrs, and everybody will collectively shit themselves at that time.

That is why I specifically said Mainstream.

You’re a waste!
In reality, they are the only brand offering performance models of pretty much everything they sell. Why complain about a company offering enthusiast vehicles across the board?

Is a 5 series not a mainstream car?
![]() 11/26/2018 at 12:48 |

To be fair, it was the brand, not the company.
And the brand has two models - a massively dated sedan with less performance than its siblings (does it even get the larger Hemis? I thought it only got the 5.7) and that’s only bought by old people, and a minivan that also doesn’t have a performance trim (no, the Pacifica S does not count as a performance trim).

I really don’t see oil moving that much higher without some sort of carbon tax.
US fracking has really driven prices lower with no end in sight to reserves.
The Saudis could drastically lower production which would spike prices, but oil is still their cash cow.
I think more realistically the price of oil will drop to nearly worthless. When humanity realizes it cant burn any on any sort of industrial scale but supply is still huge.
OTOH some Mad Max post-apocalyptic shit or war, real black-swan type events would drive prices higher.

Maybe made in America?

economy/entry level-> mainstream-> Premium -> luxury-> whatever comes above that is a generally accepted classification of cars, just like compact, midsize, large etc.
By that definition 5 series is a luxury car, charger is not.
The Dodge compares to ford taurus,Impala, Chevy SS etc.

US automakers always copy each other. If Wall Street reacts favorably to something one of them does, the others will eventually do it too.

I hope that sometime soon humanity will get its shit together re: climate change and start taxing fossil fuels to account for the huge externalities they impose (or, heck, at least stop subsidizing them). At that point, the US automakers will probably all go bankrupt. Except maybe Tesla.

It technically is by definition of the word, but I assume they meant affordable or entry level.

Hot take: they suck
![]() 11/26/2018 at 14:02 |

By the time that happens they will have had enough time to reconfigure their lineup to exclusively electric.

I don’t think Wall Street reacted favorably to Ford’s announcement though.

Yeah, assuming it happens at all. This is only my dream (not really that the US automakers go bust, but that it happens fast enough that that they wouldn’t have time to adapt).

Hotter Take: New cars suck, period.

Not exactly a hot take...

Update: I checked, no, the 300 does not get anything larger than the 5.7.
