On Sunday afternoon, m y family spent a couple of hours volunteering for the Travis County Brown Santa program , which provides Christmas gifts for needy families. Unlike other similar programs, the TCBS program makes sure that all the gifts are individually wrapped, and that takes volunteers to do the work. Go volunteer somewhere, Oppo!

I mentioned to my 16-year-old son that I needed to find the bathroom at the warehouse. He said, “Putting the brown in brown Santa?”

We have also volunteered a few times at the local food bank. It’s important work, and they feed a lot of people.

How gregarious do you have to be to sort potatoes and carrots and onions ? Which is what we’ve done the last couple of times we went. They bring in pallets stacked with giant bags of veggies, and the volunteers sort through to toss out the rotten ones and fill bags to a certain weight. These “stew bags” go to schools, which then raises the question, “Why do public schools need free food from the food bank?”

my local food bank is more of a shop
cept everything is free (legal thing...trading is fine money is not allowed) so they mostly need people to help out at the counter and box stuff as required
and i guess public schools really had their budget murdered over there

Nothing new. Education spending is always talked about, but inevitably becomes a low priority. The problem in Texas is that school funding is done through property taxes. And the people who live in the rich districts don’t want their money to go to the poor districts. I perform in schools all over Austin, and the disparity between the schools is appalling.

I think Brown Santa is when Mr. Regular brings you Wawa on Christmas morning

over here schools are pretty well funded... but teachers are underpaid
for some reason we have a shortage of teachers now (to the extent that some schools now have a 4 day week)

Teaching is such an important field, I can’t believe they don’t pay more.
