All the cheap and clean XJs are gone (fact). Over the last 2 years there have been more nice ones popping up than I thought survived. I’d have guessed no one took care of them as there’s plenty of well-used and abused ones for sale. This one is NICE but can we guess what it will sell for when the gavel drops?
Bee-a-you-tee-full specimen for any XJ!
We all knew this would happen? Or did we? I thought the XJ would surely go up in value but we’re already commonly into the low-teens for any clean, low mile examples.
This is a 2001 Jeep Cherokee 4wd Sport with a mere 59,000 miles. It appears to be in excellent condition with bright black paint and an immaculate black cloth interior. It is rare to find them this nice for sure. But what will it sell for?
Perfecto! Iconic little trucks.
There are far too many of these that have been hacked, chopped, bashed, and dicked with to count - not this one though! It’s front fascia is still intact, the bumper covers are present, all fender flairs are properly aligned, and it still has its tiny stock shoes.
I’d eat off it. Wouldn’t you?
The best part is all the low mile goodness in one of the most durable engines ever made. The Jeep 4.0l straight-six is an epic engine. Plenty of torque and horsepower for any on and off road excursion. This one is oh-so-clean. I want to strap on a roof top tent and bake some beans under the hood at some far off trophy trout quality lake.
Black on top, inside, and thankfully underneath.
Being that this one is wearing Oregon plates you might be thinking... rust? Or more realistically... moss? Neither are present to my corrected vision. It looks tasty enough to eat things off underneath (I must be hungry I’ve used this analogy before).
It doesn’t have cruise control but that isn’t needed on fire roads.
The interior is just as nice as the rest. It has all the required bits you’d ever need. It has an aftermarket stereo - I’ve had two XJs and I don’t disagree with this decision, there is something lacking from stock. Thankfully a stock unit can always be re-installed for the finicky owner.
No head rests for the rear passengers. They can snap their necks at the cost of the bean counters.
The spare tire is indeed mounted inside and on the wall. This is the factory location. Sadly I don’t think anything bigger than stock fits here (my 31” tires didn’t fit here on mine). Removing the tire provides a moderate amount more room but do you really want to risk a tow back into town?
It’s a difficult choice between the original gauge design (pre-97) and these. So basic and easy on the eyes.
Admit it - this one is going to sell for a pretty penny. But how much? I don’t think this auction is done bidding.
I’ve consulted my crystal ball, sacrificed a lamb, and I’ve rubbed off the fur on my rabbits foot to summon the final selling number from the ethereal worlds beyond.
My guess: $15,700
What’s yours?
(Winner will receive a golf clap and a cheer of congratulations.)
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
UPDATE:
This auction ended with the XJ selling for...
$14,000
That’s a large mound of money for a near 18 year old Jeep. Our contributor 19JRC99 was the winner at $14,500.

I don’t see how that’s worth anywhere near 15k...let alone the 12k its going for right now.

I grew up riding to the ski hill in one of these. My friend Mom was terrified of snow driving on the highway so we had a route of backroads to get to the hill. We weren’t fast but it would go through a foot of unplowed snow all day long.

There plenty of clean XJs in Arizona for well under $10k. Seems you can get a clean one with $100k or so miles for around $3,500. Paying $15k for one with 60k would be absolutely insane, no matter how clean it is. It seems people are artificially inflating the prices on these things. They made them from ‘83-‘01 for christ’s sake. There’s a shit ton of them out there. Here’s a clean one with 100k miles for $3k.

There’s about a dozen of them on my local CL ranging in price from $900 for dead ones to $10k for ones decked out with lifts and aftermarket goodies. I love BaT, but I hate the guys with more money than brains driving up the prices of vehicles like this.

Really annoyed at the trend of plentiful, affordable regular cars being inflated to hell. You could find low-mileage examples of these for 4 grand all day every day. That seemingly changed overnight.

Hmmm.... $7500? Oh, holy shit. It’s already at $12k?! Alright, fine, $14,500 is my guess

It’s BAT, where rational thought and reasonable valuations go to die a horrible death. Easily going to break $20k.
Also, using a non-factory stereo is always wrong in these. This one should have been equipped with a Mitsubishi cas sette deck (non-letter code model.) The correct fix is to swap to either an Infinity III or Infinity IV - which are direct bolt ins - and and lift the speakers from a Grand Cherokee.
![]() 11/25/2018 at 12:29 |

that would bring $6-7k here locally (Mid-Atlantic region) with 140k on it so I’ll say in the neighborhood of $10k

The same thing is happening to Full Size Broncos.

I’m sorry, but no way in hell would I pay $3700 for this. $1500 maybe.
The worst I saw was a dealership selling an admittedly mint ‘96 for $28 ,000!

There’s another ridiculous example

I extended the bolt that hold the spare tire in, and set the tire on the floor instead of the step up and fit a 33x12.5 tire in there.

*checks market* 2002 4 grand
2001 10 grand?
wtf?

BaT, so market price + 75%

It’s almost like what has happened to Puget Sound housing in even a remotely desirable area is happening to cars.
![]() 11/25/2018 at 12:50 |

The BaT tax only applies to like sub 100k cars

All the young adults of the 80s and 90s are starting to have disposable income and are buying the cars that were cool to them. SUVs replaced muscle cars as the cool thing to have in high school in the 80s/90s.
They also don’t make em like they used to. There is no modern replacement for an XJ, Bronco, T100s. People are becoming tired of terrible design and excessive electronics and are willing to pay a premium for a clean example.
![]() 11/25/2018 at 13:54 |

Anything over a couple grand is too much. Those trucks are junk. I don’t understand the love. Tinny, uncomfortable, boring, rust prone, poor electrics, driving dynamics of a tractor, generally cheap and unrefined and they do pretty poorly in an accident.
$ 19,000 be cause BAT is full of idiots with too much money.
![]() 11/25/2018 at 14:56 |

I wish. BaT is what blew up 997.2 GTS valuations, jumping them $10k overnight. It’s been doing the same to GT3's.
And no, you can’t use the GTS on there currently. That’s still more than 10 over market. It’s got a mediocre configuration, body damage, questionable service history, and more than ten grand in repairs. (The Alcantara seats are $6.5k.)

We bought a GT3 from a seller off BaT, he couldnt meet reserve on the site

$19.5 on BaT.

The limited would have the infinity system correct?

Reasons why I ended up with a 4Runner. The XJ I wanted was approaching 10 year newer territory.
![]() 11/25/2018 at 17:17 |

The XJ was never offered with the Infinity stereo so you have to steal it from a GC, but it was a specific option available on any trim level.

Guess I need to take another trip and find me an XJ to bring home!

Yes, I’ve had great success in an XJ winter driving. They’re tanks in the snow.

Yes indeed. Kinda rare though. Or at least more rare currently.

EXTREMELY rare to find on the Chrysler SBEC era XJs, and to my knowledge, quite literally impossible to get on anything but an SSP in the US after 1997. You could only get the AX15 or NV3550 with the diesel (not sold in the US) and the 4.0, both using a 23 spline output. The AW4 and 30RH are 21 spline output.
![]() 11/25/2018 at 22:55 |

They’re also shockingly competent handlers.
If you want proof, get a few beers in me and ask me about the time I slid an XJ 4.0 fully sideways across a field and back onto the cross-street pavement without losing control or rolling it .
That is also why I will straight up punch you if you’re one of those assholes that doesn’t clean the snow off your taillights.

You’ve convinced me.

What kind of backwards shit is going on where a 4Runner cost LESS than a XJ? We live in strange times.
![]() 11/26/2018 at 06:51 |

They def got an Infinity spec system. I remember spec’ing it not he build and price sites when I was like 11. Not the Infinity Gold like the Grand got, but if gave you six speakers (tweeters in the dash, yo) and an optional six disc changer.
The early Renix era Jeeps high end system was by Jensen IIRC.

People have too much disposable income? I mean, I don’t, but whoever is buying the mint XJs are riding high on the economic horse.

Hopefully all this crazy pricing used pricing will slow down, right? Right guys?????
![]() 11/26/2018 at 15:21 |

For the record: It’s insanely easy to add cruise control to these. All that’s needed is the buttons, clockspring and the servo underhood. A ll the plugs and ECU programming are there already.
Price? Sky’s the limit. I told my wife these would be the next big thing a few years ago... She still didn’t let me hoard clean examples. I just have my ‘97 that I’ll never sell and isn’t clean and has tons of miles and has been thoroughly dicked with.

Like Skychismo said, there are tons of cheap XJs still running around the Southwest. Most of them probably don’t even have surface rust on suspension fasteners.
