I continued cleaning up wiring today. I leave for Luxembourg and Paris on Sunday so everything is a bit frenetic. I ended up having to run into the city to pick up something from the office, so I made a quick visit to the SF Auto Show. I got to drive the 2019 Miata (automatic, blegh and in traffic only). The new engine is cool but damn the autobox geared way too low. I need to drive a manual one and get it out of 2nd gear. The only thing I really got out of it was that it has a fine interior with fine materials, albeit a cramped feeling compared to my NA6.
I didn’t start on the Exocet until 4pm but got 5.5 hours in. There are a few tools that I want to point out as godsends:
Solder Seal Heat Shrink Butt Connectors- these puppies require no crimping. Your heat gun seals the tube and melts the solder inside in about 5 seconds. Blammo - wires fused together in perfect harmony.
Second, multimeter. Third, some mini scissor things that are amazing at cutting through electrical tape.
And here it is: Working highs and working lows.
Where is the directional, you ask? Long story short: I’m dumb. I though I bought the ones with built in turn signals. I didn’t. So I’ve got to come up with something when I get back from Luxembourg. Tomorrow is cleaning day, so that my roomate can get to the laundry... oops.

I should get some of those connectors, and a heat gun, and motivation

You can always do the first 2. That just requires money and Amazon.

I've been wondering how those things work. Are they expensive?

The third requires an actual plan on how the heck I’m going to clean up the wiring on the Rabbit

I really should try those connectors....
Any suggested ones to buy?

I think they're mostly made in the same Chinese factory. I would just pick up an assortment of sizes and practice a bit. I found that I ended up needing a lot of one size.

About 20 bucks for 100. I would say well worth it over butt splices.

Yeah, that's not bad.

Never tried one of those. I guess there’s a part of me that’s always been nervous that I’d destroy the insulation long before the solder got hot enough to flow.

I got a little attachment that kind of directs the heat 90 degrees to the left/right from the heat gun. My worry is always that I'll inadvertantly burn something nearby but the attachment is helping.
