Probably less than this guy. James Love is a bit infamous in the XJ-S community for his Verne-styled dually Jag (rebuilt 5.3 V12 with a 4l80e swap) with a custom camper made out of a Lear. He drives it around the country in appropriately ridiculous costume. 1000000% not my thing but it’s neat to see someone living their best life and I utterly live for the comment threads where lots of 60 year old British men bitch about how he’s ruining a piece of history and the car would be better off crushed.
The funny part is Love has damn near written the book on updating the electronics and such in the XJS to make it, y’know, reliable enough to tow a fuckin jet around the country, thus making himself a larger benefit to the community than the combined effort of every stodgy old geezer meticulously waxing the rubber door seals on their 1200mi convertible garage queens.

0/10 throw it in the bin.

People bitch about that? It's not some limited production, handcrafted classic, it's a freaking XJS. They made tens of thousands of them on an assembly line, the newest ones aren't even 25 years old yet.

That’s awesome! I really like what he has done to the roof, although it would probably work better on a 50s or 60s design. The fact that he manages to pull a lear jet around using a Jaguar V12 proves that the engine is definitely not the reliability issue of these, too.

They’re jealous. Let them complain about this:

Either a proper wild cat of some sort or one of those “boutique” domestic cats that h a v e b e e n b r e d t o look like ocelots, marbled cats and so on. Expensive in any case (and if a r e a l w i l d c a t , most likely illegal).

Those old British guys sound like muricans who bitch about Mexicans because they don't do anything good for us or whatever their reasoning, then go eat a bunch of tacos.

At least the steering wheel is on the correct side. It’s not like an XJ deserves to be a national treasure.

Are you the guy who’s installing a small block GM in an XJ?
![]() 11/22/2018 at 11:34 |

I used to have a ‘77 XJ-S with a mild 350 in it

What does “mild” mean to you? Curious.

Man, good for that guy. He’s clearly having a blast. If I had the means, I’d be cruising around in some oddball creation too

Pretty much just rebuilt with a cam tossed in and bolt-ons. So slightly less depressing than a stock 350 lump but not gonna light the world on fire (just the tires). I don’t remember the cam but it was the most aggressive thing I could run with a stock torque converter and incredibly mediocre heads.

As long as it’ll spin both rear tires without too much effort, it’s mild enough.

Slow but torquey. Needed different gears and that 3 speed auto wasn’t doing it much favors. Was very amusing how quickly it would build speed in 3rd gear on the highway.
