Do you love gated shifters, but hate clutch pedals?

Then I have just the car for you!

Kinja'd!!!

!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!

The Valeo 5-speed automated-manual transmission allows the driver to control gears through a gated shifter without the use of a clutch pedal.

Something I never knew existed - and apparently they only shipped 18 like this to the US.

Yes, they were a thing just before they went for the F1 automated manual. Several other makers used them in the late 90s and early 2000s - Saab, Merc, Renault, Fiat.

Valeo are a French component maker who do all manner of bits including clutches.

Discount Tire wouldn’t transfer the tires from my ‘89 pickup to my ‘80 pickup, though the wheels were the exact same size. Les Schuab did it for like $150.

Where the hell am I

Seems like it?  Which means you probably have to lift to shift, I suppose?

Nearly, but without the torque converter.

Reminds me of the transmission in the NSU Ro80 which uses a vacuum sensor on the stick to operate the clutch. I think this basically uses a computerised version of that, very cool!

How am I just now finding out about this?  This transmission was invented for me!  Imagine how many people I could mess with getting into a seemingly manual Ferrari.

To say nothing of the Merc A class, Renault Mégane and Fiat Seicento.

Here’s a Seicento Citymatic. I haven’t seen one in years, they weren’t popular used.

Aww, thanks! You definitely need to check it out. If I’m the excuse you need to do it, then you have my enthusiastic  permission. Don’t let the fact that I could never afford it dissuade you in the least, and be sure to report back in detail.

I recall reading about the Valeo trans when they first came out. I don’t think they’re universally regarded as bulletproof. Caveat emptor.

One difference though: the S achs unit in the Ro80 and Citroen CX (originally designed for the same rotary) used a torque converter for starting while the various 1990s/2000s two pedal designs used automated clutches.

Oh you could probably afford it. This is about as undesirable a Ferrari a you’ll ever find.

Maintaining it, now that’s a whole different story...

Bid’s up over $ 12k. I could afford it if the kid actually gets the swimming scholarship she fantasizes about. And my expenses would be less, since I’d be divorced...

... Lemme think about it.

You’re right, I forgot about that. The Citroën CX version  was called C-matic, right? There was at least one in the CX collection/hoard/barn I visited earlier this year

Kinja'd!!! Cé hé sin > BvdV - The Dutch Engineer

Kinja'd!!!1

That’s the one. It was used on NSU and Citroën rotaries to make up for the lack of torque. The CX used it for a few years before switching to a conventional automatic but I think the GS/GSA kept it for longer. I think the hydraulic semi automatic on the DS may have been called C Matic for a while as well.

No Ferrari is undesirable now. As the prices of popular models soar people move on to the likes of the Mondial. You've missed your chance for a cheap one.

Well, relative to other Ferraris it’s undesirable.  I have never really desired one of these, personally, so I just scratch my head at the prices.
