...I should feel insulted that most of you work in fields that net you six figure salaries, and still want to complain. It wasn’t until I was 34 that I entered the workforce seriously, and even then, my hearing impairment made me an extremely unappealing hire. I started at $13/hr in a dog treat factory and now make $16/hr at a medical instruments manufacturer as a CNC operator on night shift.
You all have functioning ears, and have the ability to communicate without the need for pen and paper, and you bring in salaries bigger than I can ever hope for in my entire lifetime...
And you still want to complain?
While some complaints are valid, especially in regards to how companies are dumber than that red-headed cousin that ate glue in elementary school, I still dislike the fact that there are people willing to sling around their salary like it’s a dick measuring contest.
I don’t care if y’all can program God’s penis into a Python string or make Unix do backflips while cursing Bill Gates’ name, or that you’ve held a career for 20+ years.
Spend a decade trying to merely get by in spite of society’s lack of desire for your existence, then I’ll take your complaints. Grab a number.

I left this out for the sake of brevity: I spent a year after getting my certifications as a machinist getting job interviews and had zero offers. Several even ghosted me after finding out that I'm deaf.

And someone else has it even worst than you, so by your logic you shouldn’t be bit ching either.

A fair rebuttal. However, I'd be more sympathetic if people making six digits were less inclined to see "disabled" people as liabilities.

I don’t think “most” people on here are even sniffing 6-figures. But those that are shouldn’t be made to feel bad about it because others make less. When someone on here has a mechanical problem with an obviously expensive car (thus outing themselves as those who probably makes a lot of money), do we tell them they shouldn’t complain because some of us on here are driving Pontiac Vibes?
![]() 11/20/2018 at 01:03 |

I’m a little confused. You seem to be angry at hiring managers, but talking like these people are here on O ppo. I’ve been around here for a while and can tell you most of us are not making six figures.
It certainly seems like a rough situation, but it's not a competition. We're here to support each other, not whine about how entitled everyone is.

Everybody’s entitled to a fair shot at life. Getting denied that because I can’t hear like any other Joe, now that’s fucked up.
The reason why I get so irritated at the mere mention of a 100k+ salary is the fact that deaf people have never been able to gain that kind of wealth. Because we’re seen as incapable just because we can’t communicate normally. Those that do, are the exception to this rule. Such as my friend who actually happens to be related to a rich family name that’s had their fingers in a lot of pies .
The most common financial situation for deaf people is poverty or lower middle class, if that.
So Yeah. *goes back to work on his 10 hour night shift*

And you honestly don’t think that has very much been the case for some of us as well? Having to fight tooth and nail to not be locked a minimum wage tech support or junior-junior sysadmin box?
Not to mention, the shit they pulled on you? Is outright illegal. Clear violation of the ADA and EOE . This guy making six digits is one hair’s breadth from disabled himself, and I’ve worked with disabled folks. I literally started a screaming match when they tried to just take a hard pass on someone just because they needed a wheelchair. Not only illegal, but that was the strongest candidate by far.

Being denied employment because your deaf is fucked, I don’t think any of us will deny that. But telling people they shouldn’t complain because they have it worse is also fucked up.
Guess what bro, you have a job. And a car. You can vote. You don’t live in fear of your house getting blown apart. Ranting is okay. Telling people what they’re allowed to rant about is not. You can fuck right off with that shi t.

I think it’s a universal human attitude that everybody thinks their own job is the hardest in the world.
Really sad/funny seeing people who’re barely literate and have salaried jobs acting like total dicks to cashiers, waiters, etc.

The most common tactic is to not respond if the resume showed signs of disability. Students and graduates of deaf schools get shafted by this, and proving culpability is impossible without a paper trail.

Let me add that I am sympathetic to this though. Everybody’s struggles are different and minimizing them isn’t good for anybody involved. A little empathy with each other goes a long way.

“good oversight”. Our government and Congress abdicated their responsibilities when the recession happened. They refused to criminally charge and prosecute.
White collar criminal prosecutions have gone way down since Enron.

I don’t really give a toss about how much other people earn. Nor do I care that you are deaf. Mainly because (while those things are important to the individual in question) they make no difference to me. I’m far more interested in the quality of the person behind those things.
However, your experience does little to persuade me of the opinion that the USA is a third world country that somehow has incredible purchasing power.

I have one fully functional ear. I’m very thankful for it. The other ear is roughly 50% deaf, has screaming tinnitus 24/7, and occasionally completely incapacitates me with debilitating vertigo for up to an entire week. That ear can fuck off.
I entered the work force in earnest at 23 and I was dirt broke living paycheck to paycheck until 30. Life rewards hard work and an outlook of gratitude. You were dealt a shitty hand with your disability, but don't let it tell you that you can't succeed. Everyone has hurdles.
![]() 11/20/2018 at 05:33 |

I’m profoundly Deaf and only use American sign language as my primary language. I am a teacher and I make good money.
Before that, I still made good money as a restaurant worker, I was the second highest paid right below manager. I have never allowed my deafness be a reason or an excuse. So to me, it is a bit deplorable to see deafness being paraded around as an excuse for not earning six figures, especially as a disability.
Sure, it takes a bit more effort to land a good job but so what? There are many others with actual disabilities that are struggling to find a job and many others with multiple disabilities that make good money. I have a friend who is Deaf and have serious CP (cerberal palsy) and she teaches at two universities.
Let me tell you why there are many Deaf people who are in poverty, it’s because they chose to feel sorry for themselves and try to take the easy way out by taking government assistance. I chose not to. I chose the hard way and put a hell a lot of work to get to where I am.

It never pays to be mean to people no matter the circumstances. Especially when in a line or dealing with a cashier. They are just trying to help the person in front of you and behind you and they need to afford to give attention to each person and take the necessary time to provide the service that you are also waiting to experience. They don’t set the prices or setup the software that won’t scan an item so they have to call for help. They want to get you moving along too. Not like they don’t get stressed out as a queue grows longer and longer.
Wow, that kinda went off the rails a bit, but yeah, never pays to be mean to folks. I’ve always gotten treated the best when I’m acting nice to folks. Even in my industry of construction, we come across some very difficult people to deal with, but being mean and vindictive end up hurting you in the end, or on the next project you need to work with that person again. It just doesn’t pay off.

Seems like you’re computer literate, and can type well. Honestly, this comment right here is the reason your argument is pure bitching :
I don’t care if y’all can program God’s penis into a Python string or make Unix do backflips while cursing Bill Gates’ name, or that you’ve held a career for 20+ years.
You already know where the money is, obviously. You also probably know that you don’t need to be able to hear to code. You want six figures? Work for it. I don’t know many people that were handed their jobs where I work.
https://www.codecademy.com/
https://allaboutfpga.com/
https://www.nandland.com/vhdl/tutorials/tutorial-introduction-to-vhdl-for-beginners.html
You want to make more money than you know what to do with? Learn Python, then learn to program FPGAs. Learn MATLAB while you’re at it. You’re requirements will be documented and emailed, no hearing required. Communication will be documented, probably by email, no hearing required. You want help? I’ll buy you a Raspberry Pi and an FPGA board. You want to complain that other people have worked hard to get where they are? Can’t really help you there.
I am sorry that you have a disability. Time to stop using it as a crutch, though.
![]() 11/20/2018 at 06:50 |

Good. You did well. I didn’t, because I had to waste half a decade figuring myself out. Didn’t help that during my one year at Gallaudet, I didn’t get any help from the provost in figuring things out. (That person was then nominated to become president and then ran off campus by the students 5 years later)
So Yeah, I’m just barely starting a career I should’ve started 10 years ago. A bunch of false starts and apathetic individuals in my life were not helpful factors.
At least I managed to earn enough to pick up a car and subsequently move up to a job two towns over with median starting pay for the position.
Other upside: no crippling student debt.

So from what I understand, you acknowledge the fact that you should have started this type of career 10 years ago and are now complaining about the fact it’s difficult for you to get hired. Some people just don’t want to hire a Deaf person. Okay, that happens, their loss. I’ve been turned down from so many jobs but I never really cared because it is ultimately their loss, not mine.
There are people as you have mentioned, who earns significantly more than I and complain about that. I tell them, “Sucks to be you” and move on. Money has never been an issue for me. It is just money, I grew up in poverty so my family (hearing) was frugal and that practice still continues with me. The point is their complaining isn’t going to impact my life so why should I care. I suppose that’s the point I’m trying to get across is that about them, who gives a fuck because I certainly don’t.
I’ve had to work hard to get where I am and that makes me feel good, the obstacles and barriers I faced, I overcame. That makes me feel even more good. All that does is prepare me for when shit goes down. I’ll survive while they’re tripping with their pants pulled down to the ankles.

Working managing the front end of a grocery store, I’m always astounded by customers who think we want to give them a hard time. Literally nobody wants anybody to be in line longer than they have to, and it’s a helluva lot easier for a cashier when a person’s coupons work than when they don’t. But still, people get some weird ideas. I think some people are just too insecure to admit they read a sign or a coupon wrong, so when something doesn’t work they’d rather imagine the employees must be trying to trick them, than just accept they made a mistake.
They’ve also maybe learned (bad parenting? no parenting?) that making a lot of noise and fuss will usually get them what they want, no matter how wrong they are.
