Started up this morning with a lumpy, low idle Service Engine light came on once the engine warmed up. On the drive home from work it was very down on power and shoock when. Accelerating. Only thing I’ve tried so far is pour in injector cleaner and fresh gas from my usual station. I guess it’s time to invest in that scan tool I thought about buying and didn’t.

Accurate. If I’m lucky it’s spark plugs and not an injector or two. I’m usually not lucky

I think your idle air valve blew. Does i t try to stall while idling unless you gi ve it some gas?

I forgot that most people have occasional inconveniences with their vehicles. Worst thing that happened to me since the Tercel exploded has been a leaking oil pan gasket. A whole 16 months of peace!

You can buy a wifi OBD reader and the Carly for BMW app. Lets you program functions and refister batteries as well. Been using it for four years now and it’s been a great diagnosis tool.

My wife’s Fit has only had one problem in the 3 years we’ve had it, a bad HVAC blowed motor.
It’s almost like simple Japanese cars are the best.

No but it did at one point idle as low as 500rpm

Well, I also took my car straight to the shop to catch up with the maintenance. I'm going to assume you haven't taken the E90 anywhere nor did you do a PPI? But an E90 going limp would make it one of many similar posts on Oppo. I wouldn't worry.

Thesres was probably some preventative maintenance I could have done to prevent this

I bet when you do finally read the code it says idle a ir control. Mine blew last year and had very similar symptoms to what you’re having.

[dismissive hand wave]
Pshaw. I was trying to emphasize that I haven't blown up this one yet because $$$

Yeah if he just wants to read codes, no need for a full-on scan tool; one of those $15 dongles would do the job.

Sounds v boring TBH

I've had plenty of other life problems to fill the void don't you worry

The Carly app ($50) plus a $10 dongle gives you all the functionality of a much pricier BMW scan tool. Most dealerships charge $100 just to register a battery which a scan tool won’t even let you do. The Carly app even let me turn off my EGR sensor back when I had my 335d.

spark plug and/or ignition co il?

likely coil pack related.

16 months? How are you still alive? Does OPPO need to start you a Go Fund Me to buy a beater? ;-)

Not knocking you here, but I wouldn’t want to own just about any modern car without a simple scan tool. I have a really basic one that only displays simple OBD codes and resets them but now the bluetooth dongle + app is probably the way to go.
What year/mileage is your car? IAC is a good guess, but also coil packs. A scan tool can tell you if there’s a misfire (0301-0306). Is that the N52 engine?

N54 i thin k. 2011, with 113k miles now. Can’t believe I’ve put 11k on this car. That’s twice what I ever put on the Mitsubishi.

I was wrong it an N53. N54 is a turbo engine

Was the acceleration choppy, but down shifting fine? Mine did that and it was a coil.

Gotcha. Well, now we patiently await the scan tool results...

Just ordered it. I’ll have it on Friday. I may try getting it scanned at O’Rielys

thats a pretty accurate description of what happened.

It’s not feeding fuel to the engine on the downshift as long as you’re off the gas, so it’s a problem with either the ignition or fuel system. Coils are a common problem on the N52. My idle was also very rough and all over the place. I had a CEL for some sensor once and the only discernible difference was my instantaneous fuel economy was terrible.
![]() 11/20/2018 at 10:51 |

my idle is consistent but low. there was one point where i had the clutch in to slow down and the engine almost died, but caught itself at 500rpm, then came up to 600.

Might be the idler then. Mine was doing something like that, I didn’t do anything, the problem just went away, but it never threw a code.

Had similar problems in my 328i. Changed plugs and coils and all was well.

I’m thinking that’ s probably it. ECS sells a kit of 6 coils and 6 plugs for 200 bucks. not too bad. But i’ll wait till I get the scan tool on there and find out for sure. I’d hate to spend 200 buck and then find out it was the 100 dollar IACV hat caused the problem

I recommend buying from FCP euro. Good prices and they have a lifetime warranty on all parts.
