So what's all this smoke in the air doing to my car?

A popular mod to get a couple more HP out of M5's is to remove the charcoal filter that vaguely restricts a little air from the engine. I opted to skip that. However the air here in SF is so bad that I can’t see SF from the bridge above it half the time.

After this clears up I'll be replacing those filters and getting an oil change just because. However does anyone know what this poor air quality actually does to an engine -- if anything?

Nothing. It is far far far more dangerous for you than your car...

How much power do you actually gain by removing the filter? By what percentage does the power increase? Is it really noticeable?

Seems like hubris to take such an advanced and highly strung car, and start removing filters in the name of miniscule power gains

The car has a carbon air intake filter? I’ve seen them for the cabin, but not for the engine air cleaner.

Anything short of MASSIVE particulate contamination (think: volcano) won’t do anything. It’ll just burn up in the combustion chamber.

No ill effects. My Volvo’s sucked in what LA people call “air” since 1983 and it’s still chugging along at 266k miles and my dad’s Toyota truck spent all its life in SF with no ill effects - currently on its second engine because he didn’t want to repair the old one. As long as it’s not water...

I spent less than $100 on RPI air scoops that force a little induced air at speed and I’m 1000% certain that has more bang for the buck and also barely does much under 70 mph.

Texas was on fire right after I got the Lancer. The worst I saw was the air filters going straight grey. I got asked if I wanted to swap out the cabin air filter because it was pretty gross, and I was like, can I wait until the next town over isn’t on fire anymore? I don’t have allergies or anything. Thanks.
