Slow day at work, so I decided to make some spacers for my “nice” wheels for the car:

Kinja'd!!!

Perfect measurement on the center bore (+.002"), perfect 5x100 bolt pattern.

nice I want to get some spacers for the winter wheels on the BMW because they are so much skinnier than the stock wheels.

Neat! Y’k no w I was just thinking the other day about what to do with old brake rotors, if there’s anything that they could be used for besides turning them in for scrap. One of the ideas was to cut away the outer disc for cheap wheel spacers. Not that I even need wheel spacers. But it’s an idea.

If I could ever go back to school and learn a trade, machining would be it.  It is like witchcraft.

On my car, if you doubled the thickness of the rotor, the wheel wouldn’t sit on the center bore anymore - or not by much . I mean, the lug bolts would still keep it in the middle, but that seems like a problem. You don’t want the bolts bearing the weight of the car, right?

Hm. You’re right, a brake rotor would be lacking that hub-centric element.

All that flange does is center the wheel, it doesn’t provide anywhere near enough surface area to support the vehicle.

You know, good point. Because... it’s only 1/2" at most anyway. Makes sense....

Nice chamfe rs. I always hat e when I get or touch something that is not deburred. It makes me irrationally angry.

although someone else pointed out, it’s not enough to support the car anyway, it’s just centering the wheel. Which, if it catches at all, it would still do that job. So... maybe I’m wrong.

Same here. Usually not an issue in our shop, especially on things I’ve programmed, but it still happens on occasion. It usually ends in an irrational freak out on the guilty party....

I love doing it. We have 4 machines I program and run for, plus 3 manual mills/ a CNC lathe/ wire edm/ and 2 edms , so the possibilities are pretty endless.

I enjoy doing simple little things like this when we get slow.

What’s funny is a month or so ago I was window shopping Bronco wheels, and thinking “well if I got those ones I’d also have to buy wheel spacers”.

Then realized that I could just make them at work, and felt a little silly.

My summer wheels rub slightly on the inside of the wheel wells. Figured this is a quick easy fix.

I grew up around machining and I still can’t get over the tolerances wire EDMs are capable of. I do love running a manual lathe though, it’s really rewarding.

Sadly in production chamfers and breaking edges are not priorities. We do mostly one off/prototype work, so making it perfect the first time is kinda ingrained in us.

My S56 Makino and F5 Makino mills can easily hold .0001" tolerance, .00005" tolerance if I sneak up on the number. They’re actually more accurate than our Wire EDM, but it is getting old at this point, so it’s not what it once was.

The EDM Sinker is really where it’s at for accuracy, our EDM guy can hit .00002" tolerance with that machine, it’s insane!

I like the challenge of holding tight tolerances, I’ve even gotten our old VMC TREE 1060 machines to hold tolerance within .0005", which is good enough for most of what we do. Getting them to do that has gotten our production through the roof and they are old heavy machines that can handle heavy machining, unlike the Makinos which are high speed mills . Burying a 2" cutter .200" deep and taking a 1.2" step over is god damn impressive.

I was under the impression that having the studs bear all of the weight was less-than-ideal, but that you could get away with it as long as you weren’t stressing it beyond normal driving. Given that some spacers do have the hub-centric ring, I figured it was important, and that only cheap spacers skimped out on that feature ... Now I’m not so sure.

I’m not sure either, now. This sounds like one of those questions that if I start googling it, I’ll look up 2 hours later wondering where I am.

I’m sure we could work something out. Need a bolt pattern, center bore, and thickness you want it.
