According to the documentary, “100 years of BMW,” Elvis acquired this car from fucking Hans Stuck Sr. He then proceeded to paint it red..
Regardless if women would leave lipstick on it, carry around a fucking finishing cloth like the rest of us a nd wipe it off.
Rant over.

It’s white again, now that BMW owns it. They had it on display at the Zentrum in Spartanburg for a while.

ah yes, I probably should have included that too. I had forgotten in my blind rage.

Pretty sure they also put a BMW engine back in it.

Then this will inflame you
“ Surprisingly, it was not possible to find the engine that had been installed specially for Elvis. So, instead of the 150 hp 3.2-litre V8 lightweight engine from Bavaria, they used a large-volume engine from Chevrolet.”

I’m missing the problem/issue

A chevy engine with the distributor in the front?
![]() 11/18/2018 at 22:01 |

man, that’s more disappointing than anything.
Is BMW not able to recreate the same engine in their factory or something?

he desecrated a legends race car

jordan and the slow runner pointed out that they used a chevy engine, it keeps getting worse

It’s a BMW who cares. If it was a Porsche I’d be mad

update: they eventually recreated the original

It’s a priceless thing today, but it was just another used car back in 1958.

I hope you get the same feelings I did

while I would agree with you if it were one of the other 507s made, but this belonged to a racing legend
![]() 11/18/2018 at 22:14 |

it wasn’t a “legend” back then. it was a promotional car given to a celebrity.
you’re viewing it through the lenses of 2018. back then it was no different than the Superbowl MVP getting a Corvette.
just like the hundreds of thousands of ‘57 Chevys which were made. all but a few rusted out and were thrown away.
nobody gives a crap.

I’m gonna side with this logic and reasoning.
![]() 11/18/2018 at 22:18 |

that’s because you are wise.
![]() 11/18/2018 at 22:20 |

and before it was a promotional car given to a celebrity, it was owned and raced by a driving legend.
while I absolutely understand people had no idea what they had back then, case in point my dad selling his ‘71 911t back in 1989, I would think someone would tell Elvis it belonged to one of the greatest hillclimb drivers of that era.

dude, in the end they’re all rusty piles of metal.

but..but a cool guy drove it really fast
![]() 11/18/2018 at 23:08 |

It doesn’t sound like Hans Stuck actually owned it, he drove it on BMW’s behalf so it was really an ex-press fleet car and worse, an old racing car.
Old race cars were pretty much trash until the ‘70s when vintage racing was a thing. You could buy a 250 GTO in the ‘60s & early ‘70s for about the price of a Miata today.

Meh, it ended up grenading itself too and he’s got a better one now.

there was a guy in the PCA with a 74 RS . And someone was talking about the “one that got away” and said __ never had that problem” . HTe guy the goes “ Uh so did I, I turned down a 908 because I thought “ why do I want a beat up used race car?” ”

they really were disposable or scavenged for parts for the next season. The best example how the shelby daytonas were bassically given away at the end of the season.

I remember reading that Cobra Daytona Coupe CSX2287 was offered to a Shelby mechanic for free (or next to free) when they were done with the salt flats endurance run.
At that point it was a shitheap held together with bailing wire and he declined.

Stuck didn’t own the car, it was a press car that he raced occasionally when it wasn’t on display or loaned out. Pretty much the same as that NSX Senna drove around Suzuka in that relatively famous onboard video, it’s just a standard car someone happened to drive once or twice.

Eh tbh I am kind of sad BMW restored it back to factory. I think the red and V8 made it interesting and special.
