I now have over 5,000 miles on our new Ascent, and I have really enjoyed how powerful and smooth the engine is. For a larger vehicle it has some get up and go. So as I drove by a Crosstrek I decided it doesn’t need the WRX engine , instead it needs the Ascent engine. And I still think the Ascent engine will be the basis for the next generation Sti.

Their justifi
cation is probably “but it would cut into WRX/STi
sales” which is true, but it’s only because they don’t make it in a hatch.

Forget Crosstrek, they should put that 2.4 Ascent turbo in the Outback and Legacy. I’d buy either one cvt be dammed.
And speaking of more powerful powertrains there is a new plugin hybrid coming. Hoping it is faster than the regular slowtrek.

My wife and I love it. It's spacious, comfortable, relatively quiet inside, and works well with the kids in car seats and the 80lb doggo.

I suggested this would be the perfect replacement for the WRX hatch in some Youtube reviews (commenting on YT yes. I know I was asking for it)and the crosstrek apologist horde descends upon me everytime.
“you dont understand the mission of the crosstrek” “;buy a forester xt instead” “it will be too expensive” “the regular engine is fine you don’t know how to drive”
one moron literally called me “a fat neckbeard who sits in his mom’s basement and bemoans the lack of performance cars who will never buy a turbo crosstrek while not even being able to afford a $1000 beater.” SMH
Subaru is missing a big opportunity here. I think they know it will cannibalize wrx sedan sales. Their loss.

Subaru grew up a few years ago and dropped the XV. It’s like they never learned their lesson after the “B9" Tribeca. Why add unnecessary letters and numbers before a perfectly good model name.

I agree it would sell great - for lack of a 2.5RS Impreza this would be the closest to a WRX hatch you could get.
Several months ago I was at a Subaru dealer (my mom bought a crosstrek) and was looking at the STI in the showroom, I mentioned to the salesman that when they have it as a hatch I’ll be back for one, he said that everyone says the same thing. I think they’ve really cost themselves a lot of sales on that; the Impreza can be sedan or hatch, and it’s not like they didn’t sell many hatch WRXs in the previous generations to justify developing it.
I think part of it may be a shift in their corporate strategy more towards their “everything is good and safe and family and pets” leaving the performance projects neglected. “Why no you can’t get that WRX
as a hatch, but we can option this Crosstrek up to the same price for you!”

0/10 never comment on YouTube. If they made one they would get me as a customer immediately. The sedan just doesn't work as well for my family. Rear facing car seats are a pain.

11/18/2018 at 10:36 | 2 |
Yeah. They have missed out on a ton of sales because of the lack of hatch and the lack of turbo BRZ. They may not think the “need” to sell these because of polls or whatever but the enthusiast crowd is being shut out. I think the sedan option was to try and cut costs and steal some Evo crowd, but they just pissed off the hatch or else crowd.

Assuming the wrx/STi is on the global platform, it’s likely the next wrx/STi will in fact be “made out of the crosstrek” which was made out of an Impreza and has been “made into” the Forester & Ascent. The Outback and Legacy are sl ated to be on the global platform as well.
I suspect what you want is an STi hatchback. I do too, but not using crosstrek body lines. I want something ultra aggressive something similar to the Viziv concept.

Yaaaaasssssss! I miss my hatch WRX. How can you get rid of a car that was 50% of the sales for that model? I have no interest in the current gen WRX in it’s 4 door form. I went with a nice commuter car (Mazda3 GT with a 6 speed) for now but give me a hatch and I’ll be sold. One thing that is an issue is HP and mileage with the two last generations. Cars have cought up big time. When your Altima has the same HP you’re in need of revision. Also, they need to change the vape bro image that they’ve gotten lately.

Yeah, while there are a lot of the “say they would but wouldn’t actually buy it” people always making noise, I think they’d be surprised how many hatches they would sell (and turbo BRZs but I can see that also being some sort of agreement with Toyota).

I agree, they’re missing out for sure. But the corporate Subaru mentality right now is “we’re having our best sales ever with the current WRX, clearly nothing needs to change.” Which really explains all their old stuff that they refuse to update *gives long hard look at the EJ engine*

I I traded a 2016 4 cylinder for a 3.6 2018 Outback. The difference is amazing, car is much quieter and smoother running and the CVT is less annoying. The difference in pickup is amazing. I wanted to get the six cylinder before they stopped making it. I think 2019 will be the last year they'll be offering the 3.6 in any Subaru.

11/18/2018 at 14:44 | 2 |
yep - and they are still relatively small. They have to pick and choose what they spend their money on and that needed to be the Ascent and updated Forester. Next we’ll get some sort of redone Outback/Legacy because those three are their bread and butter. I’m just hoping that some of that tech, like that new 2.4 motor, trickles down.

This issue about Crosstrek needing more power from a turbo is rediculius as it’s not a ralley car for masses! It’s a do everything a family wants to do with great versatility for anyone and yes; great gas mileage for car with 4 wheel drive at a great price! It’s the best bargain out there with suspension drives great over any road surface with great handling too!
I got a 2018 Crosstrek and it has plenty of power! Rockets off line and good acceleration up to 80 before you know it! Yes you need to know how to drive a CVT over automatic but muscle memory comes quickly!
Could be quicker in overtaking from say 40 or 50 to say 70 or 80 range but little planning works good plus getting over 30 MPG average and better all highway! Tons of room and roomy for 5 plus storage! Oh and did I mention it’s superb full time All Wheel Drive plus new X-Mode plus 5 star crash safety rating!
I’ve owned most my Subaru’s over 10 years each and 300,000+ miles too!

Its annoying to me it’s not at least an option.
Subaru has the engines. They obviously know how to sort a sporty car. Just make it an option.
But reality is Subaru is still relatively small company, very conservative, and I’m guessing have done the ROI calculations showing its not worth the investment.

You do know that you won’t be getting 300000 out of a CVT? The best cvt’s are only good for 150000. Look at the CVT in the Nissan juke owners are lucky if it last 60k. Most if not all are non serviceable, and no one rebilds them so expect 6 to 7k to replace it. I had a Dodge caliber with one, great car till the CVT started going out . Now I have a 2006 Impreza and love it.

I’ve had them as service loaners. It
is amazingly smooth and sounds great. The way it builds torque is sublime. It’s not a fast off the line, but when you put your foot down on the highway it goes to triple digit speeds without you noticing until you glance down at the speedo.

When old things sell well it can be a double edged sword. If managed properly, it gives them more
R&D time to get the next generation right and come out of the gates with something that beats the competition and is reliable
. Of course it could mean instead of doing that the execs just swim in a gold coin pool. Let’s hope its the former.
