Performance for the money carried the day. Sorry Toyota. 2018 GTI 6 speed manual.
I have had an anti-VW bias from my exposure to 90s Jettas, but this thing is a hoot to drive. I couldn’t stop smiling.
And PLAID SEATS.

Also, I commend you for your transmission choice.

Congrats! Excell ent choice, the seats alone are worth it.

Just remember, if you tune it, he’ll have to replace the clutch.

One of us. One of us.
Did you get the Performance Package?
How soon are you going to start modding it? I highly recommend removing the clutch delay valve, which will make shifting feel far more direct; especially coupled with removing the clutch return spring.
I have a turbo-muffler delete installed on mine, which paired with a stronger boost cut-off spring makes more Choo-Choo noises and boost cut off is instantaneous.
I have a custom-fitted shift boot made from that seat fabric I can sell you if you’re interested. Had a couple extra made when I had mine done. The seat fabric shift boots work well with the Cobb replacement shift knobs (or any other aftermarket ones) if you find the gear shift feels sloppy after a while.
You might also want to become best friends with someone who owns a VagCom cable, or buy one for yourself so you can enable the window drop+unlock button key hold, hold the lock sensor to close the windows, etc.
I’ve had mine since January 2016. Feel free to AMA about owning it.

Man I love those seats! VW maintenance scares me, but you can afford it :)
I just wish some manufacturer would have the balls to sell me a new crew cab pickup, with two plaid bench seats.

clutch and dog-boonneeeeee....
at least he knows about it

Congrats, also way to go with the manual. Is that Dark iron blue or midnight blue ?
![]() 11/17/2018 at 23:54 |

It’s an SE by the looks of it, so it’s a PP. All 2018 SE and up have the PP & LP standard.

It’s not any more than my Fiesta’s maintenance.

Congrats. Big change from the Infiniti. Enjoy.

Plaid seats has always been a gigantic draw for me. I believe Volvo is doing it again too. So much fun.

That’s the best hit and run outcome I’ve ever heard..

I love how the red line continues through the headlight housing. Beautiful.
The attention to detail and the fit and finish in the GTIs have always been very impressive, especially for the price point .
I can already see your smiles per gallon
going up!

I’m proud of you. This is much better than a Corolla.
I was at the VW dealer trying to convince my in-laws to buy a Mazda (and leave the VW dealer) last week, and I happened to sit in a new GTI with those amazing plaid seats. HOLY SHNIKIES I loved it. So comfy... I didn’t drive it because I was already afraid I’d buy it.

Congrats that thing looks beautiful inside and out!

I second the VagCom (VCDS) cable and software. You have to do a bit of reading to figure stuff out, but it’s great to have.
As for forums, vwvortex is useful for vag-com tips and problem research. Upgrades too, although be skeptical of everything you read there and look for corroboration . I f you feel the urge to start vaping, log off and walk away for a while. I’m kidding. Mostly.

Well that escalated quickly.
![]() 11/18/2018 at 09:25 |

When did they start doing a clutch delay valve? I had a 2007, and I don’t think it had one. I remember that being the first thing I did on my E39.
Congrats IM, you will love it. All I ever did on mine was the stage 1 APR, and it was a hoot.

Congrats! SE trim with plaid seats is the best choice! These are such fantastic cars.

Nice!
If you’re looking for a bit more get up and go, Cobb Tuning and Integrated Engineering are the two companies I would go with. Cobb does all their stuff with a handheld tuner, while IE does the laptop-connected to your OBD port thing, but they’ve got good word of mouth from the VW community.
ShopDAP.com is a good resource for other parts and tools, I got an interior headlight cover-thingy from them that was pretty cheap and OEM. They seem like good folks.

I was thinking yesterday that he’s looking at a $25k carolla why not a GTI or a Civic si for the same price. Good choice.

Welcome to the club! I’ve had mine for a month now and can’t get enough of it.

Time to turn up from a GTI to your own special trim.
Modding is about making a car perfect for you, your style and your roads.

Welcome to Oppo’s VW division. I will gladly buy your GTI in 100k miles.

You haven’t had either long enough to know how expensive either will be to keep on the road long term. I bet the VW will “w in ” that by a lot. Although maybe not, those STs see kinda high strung.
Doesn’t matter though, he can afford it. I'm thinking you're single, live at home, and have a good job, so it wouldn't matter to you either. For me, that would matter. I’ve got a mort gage, a wife, and two kids on the salary of a middle school shop teacher.

The oil change intervals are longer, the oil isn’t really more expensive, the transmission service costs a bit more(just as frequent and less prone to failure), etc.
It’s not a premium car, it’s just a VW.
![]() 11/18/2018 at 15:43 |

I'm thinking more about repairs, long term.
![]() 11/18/2018 at 15:46 |

Turbos and such cost about the same.

Congratulations on the new car.
I never quite saw a VW on your horizon.
I hope you love it as much as the other VW Golf'ers.
