A lot of those door-to-door driveway sealing people are scammers though.

Creepy guy trying to get into a woman’s home maybe?  That could be worth a call to the police.

The BBB runs ad s on our local radio station warning about various things like “hackers” who try to “hack into” your Amazon account by asking you to email them your username and password; or thieves who jam ATM’s full of napkins; or that exact scenario above, someone offers to reseal your driveway for cheap then fucks off with the money you handed them for “supplies”.

I am on our neighborhood email group, and people are constantly sending out warnings about “suspicious” solicitors. Not sure calling the police is warranted, though.

That’s pretty lame, but scammers are frequently door to door type people.  here is a preview of my next blotter post:

11: 57 p.m. A deer was struck by a car and required immediate medical attention. Unfortunately, someone shot it instead.

So? You say no, like she did, and they leave. Why does that rate a police report?

They are. I can’t tell you how many roofing scammers have bothered me over the years.

“We’ll get you a new roof for free.”

Yeah, sure you will dingle-berry, piss off.

And they do. No police report warranted.

The township I used to live in had a problem with scammers taking advantage of ( mostly) elderly homeowners, I think the deal was they would take payment up front and either not do any work, or just roll black paint on the driveway and call it done.

The police sent out a notice asking people to contact them if they were solicited by anyone fitting that sort of description. I don’t know how many did, but it isn’t a bad thing to call it in. Just because you said no, doesn’t mean they didn’t go down the street and get some cash out of someone else.

Goes without saying they don’t have a business license or pay taxes, either.

In my town they need to get a daily permit to sell door to door. Just looked it up: Peddling; $7.50 daily ID badge /  fee, also for soliciting. Canvassing is no charge and no required ID.

I put up a no soliciting sign and usually don’t get bothered. Except for mormans and one guy from the election.

Yeah , I get that, but in this case the woman said no, and the dude left. Why do you then call the police?

I've had literally dozens of scammers offering me a free roof. I tell them to piss off, and they do. No call necessary.

I’ve lived places where door to door solicitation is illegal. If that’s the case here, I see nothing wrong with calling the police to report it.

Not everyone knows it’s probably a scam, and they could easily get money out of someone a little too trusting. On the good chance it is a scam, these people just tried to steal money from you. They’re probably going around the neighbourhood trying to steal money from other people. Maybe they’ve already stolen money from trusting neighbours. Calling the police could stop the would-be theives.

No one likes a theif, but you think it’s wrong to rat  them out?

“Irish Travelers”

At least near-ish where I live, there is a large population of these, and they go to door “selling” shit like this. They are basically waiting to find someone who pays up front, or they make it look like they did something, and threaten if the owner doesn’t pay up.

Would you think it’s worthwhile to report someone walking along a row of parked cars trying all the door handles? For all you know he’s just a good guy looking out for his neighbours and making sure they’re locked, right? Not likely.

How many legit businesses do you honestly think would be canvassing door to door knowing there’s a well known scam in their line of work where people do exactly that? Someone saw someone else behaving in a typical manor of someone up to no good, and they reported it. Whether or not the police take action on it is up to them, and I’m guessing they probably won’t, but the report could help someone out down the line who might be dealing with a fraud. The defrauded person may wait a while for their driveway to get resealed before reporting it. The report that someone was doing the fraudulent thing helps to add credibility to the case, and could establish a timeline that leads to an arrest.

Would I myself report it? To be honest, p robably not. But would I criticize someone else for having done so? No.
