Kinja'd!!!

Toby as a peace offering.

My youngest was 1 of only 2 freshmen to make wind ensemble! I am very proud of him - it is almost all Juniors and seniors. He is also a straight A student, and appears to have come through the mental health issues that put him in a hospital for 6 weeks last year. Hang in there with your kids. I was utterly lost when he was in the grip of severe depression, and he has come so far. I am so proud of him.

My wife met with his teachers, and they gushed that he is a joy to have in class. One of them asked what he plays, and the band director said, “Anything I put in front of him, he can play.”

I am lucky in general, I have a good life. But I feel particularly fortunate that I have 2 good boys who I am confident will be good men.

The older one is upset because the big state band competition in Stockton has been canceled due to smoke, and this was a big thing for the seniors. They had a real chance of winning. He is handling it well, but is most upset that all his friends are mad at him for telling them they should have a positive attitude because no one can help a natural disasters. But his friends are locked into feeling like something was taken from them, so they turned on him.

High school is drama

Sounds like you are doing it right. I have an 8 year old who isn’t very outgoing, doesn’t have a lot of friends a nd who is ahead of the curve as far as learning goes. In fact, I just had a meeting with his school to express my concerns that he is going to outpace their ability to adequately keep him engaged at some point in the near future.

My biggest fear for him are that he won’t be happy. I don’t much care about anything other than that. He is a wonderful, empathetic, intelligent, intuitive, inquisitive kid and I hope he can navigate all of that while other kids begin to recognize he is not really like them, in some respects.

My fondest memory at a parent teacher conference was when his teachers told me that they adored his sense of humor. “None of the other kids are able to understand his jokes, but we think he is hilarious.” He’s a 40 year old man in an 8 year olds body.

It sounds like you have managed it all well. Congrats to both of your kids. It sounds like you and your wife are doing well by both of them.

Nice! And it’s really great to see that your older son has a better grip on reality than   his classmates. It’s a sign that he was raised well - and it will serve him well as an adult too.

Brag on, dad. I’ve heard it said that there are no good parents or bad parents. There are parents who try, and parents who don’t try. Congrats to your whole family. I can certainly understand the feelings of your son’s classmates. As I’m sure you know, band can be hyper-competitive, even a bit obsessive. It’s unfortunate that they don’t get a chance to compete, but your son is right, and the other students will understand that in time. He is wise beyond his years.

That’s awesome IM and how one truly wins at life.

As a former high school wind ensemble-ist, I know how stressful it is to go through auditions in high school. Good on him!

(Also, always good to see Toby pop up on Oppo. Who’s a good boy? Toby’ s such a good boy. )
