Is it just me? Every Golf I see is either a R or a GTi. I see way more Golf Rs than GTis, and way more GTis than base Golfs.

Kinja'd!!! Kinja'd!!!

The same can be said for the Porsche 911. EVERY 911 I see is a Turbo S (never a non-S) or a GT3. I would be curious to see the sales numbers compared to the base Carrera and Carrera S.

Must be geography. Here in NH, I see about even GTIs and regular Golfs, and maybe 5% of that total I see Rs, plus one white E-Golf occasionally.

With 911s, I hardly ever see them at all, when I do they are mostly C2 and C4s with a very occasional Turbo or Turbo S.

I see a lot of GTIs, only 1 or 2 Rs in IN

I definitely agree about GTIs. I can’t remember the last time I saw a base Golf.

As for 911s, I feel like I see a pretty even split of Turbo badges and Carerra badges.

In all fairness, GT3’s are all the rage at the moment...manuals especially.

I see a TON of GTI’s by me, very few R’s and a metric ton of normal Golfs

The only base Golfs I ever see are Zipcars in DC or Baltimore.

Honestly, it’s probably because the GTI is fairly cheap as it is and comes with more stuff at its base level.  I’ve seen base Golfs for sale @$17k, base GTI @$19.5k.  For another 2-3k, why not?

If you have enough dough for a Turbo, you can scale down to a GTS and be called a “connoisseur” or scale up to a Turbo S and be called a “true appreciator of performance”

With the “Turbo” you’re a “tryhard”

About the Golfs, I see a lot more regular golfs than any other kind

I agree, but also think I just notice them more. Regular golfs look pedestrian, while the others have that “what up, I might be fast” look. With the wheels, hunkered down a little more.

Just look at the numbers, VW sells more GTIs than regular Golfs and when you add in the R, the GTI/R sells almost double what the Golfs do.

Same here if we exclude the wagon. Around me probably 50% are GTIs, 25% Rs and 25% Golfs. Lots of Golf Rs in northern NM. (7,000+ ft elevation means lots of turbo AWD vehicles - a lot of people move from a WRX to a Golf R here). Back when there was a TDI I saw a lot of those. There are a lot of Sportwagens now and the Alltrak has been popping up like crazy.

I do see a good mix of all models of 911 .

The local Porsche dealer has sold as many GT-’s and GT-RS in the last two weeks as they have sold Carreras of any kind in the last 6 months.

Despite working about a mile away from a VW dealer, I don’t see very many Golfs at all.  Of the ones I do see though, I can’t remember the last time I saw a base model.

Quite simply put there are better choices than those in base trim at the price point.

Back then every single Golf I saw that wasn’t a GTI was a TDI. With the TDI out, why would people risk German maintenance when a Corolla or Civic does the same job? Don’t forget the Koreans too.

Likewise for the 911. My friend was shopping for one, ended up with an M4 instead.

I agree with you on the GTI, although R’s are not that common around here. Base Golfs seem to be rare around here - at least the Mk VII’s (early gen Golfs are common, especially TDIs ).

I think that the Golfs that people want are either GTIs or TDIs - and with the latter becoming persona non grata, you’re left with GTIs.

I don’t agree on the 911 at all though - - I tend to *notice* the GT3's or Turbos (and even the lucky bastard that has a GT2RS near me), but I do see a lot of ‘regular’ 911s.

Because in Canada a R is only a couple thousand more expensive than a fully loaded  GTI. It’s a better value. Plus the AWD is nice for the winter. I own an R.

Like everyone else, I see a ton of GTIs, a good number of Rs and almost no base models. However, m ost of the R’s I see are MkVIs. The new ones are rare enough that I still say “hey, an R!” when I see one. (Even if I’m alone.) Most of the VW dealers around here appear to have only 1 or 2 Rs in inventory.

Even more rare? The super-poverty-spec MkVI Rabbit. I go weeks with only seeing the one that lives down the street, and i t’s the most basic modern VW I’ve ever seen.

Seriously? That’s crazy, considering how quickly they escalate in price.

Some people must just have an awful lot of money laying around...

Probably has to do with dealers stocking the trim levels that most people want. In ye olden times it would be the cars with A/C AND a tape deck, now it’s the upper-midrange models or the most basic-high-end models, whatever’s got the automatic transmission, blueteeth, and a sunroof.

I rarely see Golf Rs; GTIs are pretty frequent but I definitely see more standard Golfs.

I live in the upper Midwest where corvettes and camaros reign supreme so any 911 sighting  is pretty rare.

The GTI has outsold the lower trim Golfs in the US for some time now. People looking for a cheap and economical small car go for the value and warranty of the Koreans or the trusted durability of the Japanese (and, increasingly, don’t even buy a car at all, but a crossover). That leaves the hot hatch market, who appreciate the GTI for what it is.

Its sort of a similar situation GM had with the Corvair. People looking for economical transportation went for a Falcon or Chevy II, but the Corvair found a niche as an affordable sporty car, with the higher trim Monza eventually making up the bulk of sales.

I’d say over half of the golfs (golves?) I see are GTI’ s and then probably pretty even between base and R’s, maybe a slight advantage to the R's, say 60% GTI 25% R and 15% Golf.

Here in Silicon Valley, the most common type of Golf that I see is the e-Golf. Second most common is the GTI.

Also, I daily drive a current-gen base Golf. It’s nice to not  see clones of my car everywhere.
