So, I have a bit of a dilemma when it comes to my winter tires. I still have roughly 50% tread on them, but they’re now three years out of date according to the DOT markings on the sidewall. When they’re not used, they’re stored in my basement.
Oppo, what would you do? Would you continue running tires that are past their “good” date, or would you get new ones?

Three years is nothing. My current snow tires are closing into 6.
Visually check for damage and dryness of the rubber. If they aren’t super close to the wear indicator for tread you’re fine.

How much highway driving are you doing?
If you’re just tooling around town, you’re probably fine. If you’re going to be hitting the highway and putting a lot of heat in them, I wouldn’t chance that.
Also need aware that the rubber will have hardened by now, so you're not going to get the full benefits of snow tires anymore.

Yeah, they aren’t dry at all, and the tread blocks are in good shape and show even wear. Another year it is!

People actually worry about this?
My “spare” set of tires are from 2002. They’re stored inside when not in use, so they still look like brand new. You can bet your ass I still run them.

The majority of my driving is done on the highway at roughly 75mph (obviously when there’s no snow). I for
go
t about the heat I’m putting in to them, you make a good point.

They’re fine.. tires will last a lot longer when stored inside, too.

When my M3 was my daily driver I drove it through 6 winters (mostly highway) that era’s B lizzak performance variant (circa 2008). Like yours they still had plenty of tread and performed well. I’d say ride em until they’re noticeably worse, or if you see any kind of cracking/other signs of aging rubber.

Yeah, I wouldn’t mess around with them then. That’s just asking for a blowout.

Wait, are they three years old, or three years out of date, meaning eight years old? If they’re three years old, then you’re good to go. I read your post as three years out of date, which would make them eight years old.

Three year old tires are nothing to worry about as long as the tread is still squishy and the sidewalks are not dried out. I ran my WS-70 blizzaks for 5 winters and a total of about 20,000 miles and then sold them to a Subaru Impreza that could overcome the 30-40% tread that had worn off.

You’re correct. If they were only 3 years old, I wouldn’t really care. They’re 3 years past the “good” by date.

There might be some confusion here. They’re 8 years old, 3 years past the “good” date. I didn’t run them last year simply because I was lazy. I guess I probably know what I have to do, even though I don’t want to.

OK then, if they’re 8 years old, and you mos tly run 75mph on the highway, I’d replace them.

You don't have a dilemma, you have tires that need to be thrown away.
