My commute is usually 13 miles, but one of the main highways was shut down for 5 hours today. There were no police warnings until you got to the crash(Thanks, Lexington PD), causing quite the jam.
And this leads me to a mini rant: Whoever designed most of the roadways around here , should be thrown into traffic. In what world is it a good idea to have absolutely no main road on one side of a highway, staggered left turn lanes, no lights, no right turn lanes, and no bypass route? I won’t even get to the interstate entrance/exits that 18 wheelers completely block because they are merging when you are trying to get off.
Also, thanks guy who didn’t wear his seatbelt who ate blacktop today for shutting down the town.

Reminds of the Norm MacDonald bit about us as drivers. When we see a deadly accident, we never think, “Oh God how awful,” we just stew and say, “That dead guy made me late!”

I mean, it was a pretty preventable death.

I highly recommend Waze for avoiding bad traffic.

Are you like me in that you never use the volume knob on the radio because the power symbol would then not but upright? I exclusively used the steering wheel controls in my Golf for that reason.

The issue is there was no way to avoid it. I was using Waze.

I actually do use it occasionally, I just lucked out on it being centered.

I have only one route to get to my house from work. There is an alternate route, but it would take me about 3 hours extra. 7 or 8 times a year I will happen upon an accident and sit there for a couple of hours. That’s with me checking TripCheck before I leave town. If I didn’t do that the number would be higher.

Looks like a typical Seattle area commute time on a rainy day.

My commute usually takes 25 minutes on a bad day.

I was all like, “man, I dunno how long I’m going to last driving a stick shift in DC traffic,” contemplating what kind of automatic transmission car I would get, and then I got laid off, with a severance package, and lined up a new job/sorta-my-own business (it’s not that complicated but not worth explaining) where I work from home. I think it’s been at least a month since I filled my tank. I don’t even remember actually. I mostly just putz around my little corner of the burbs, going to my gym that’s a mile away and various other errands that are for the most part all close by. It’s DELIGHTFUL.

Everyone seems to think the internet made everyone assholes, but traffic proved we were all assholes long before the internet existed.

What you wrote implied there were no warnings, thus the suggestion. I always check Waze before I leave the driveway so I can see what might be in the way and select my route accordingly. Sometimes things happen along the way and mess it all up. As for a lack of alternative routes, there are lots of reasons a particular route has few or no alternatives. You can usually thank an environmentalist, a politician, or a limited budget for that.

We get more of the same here in Louisville. I am thinking my next new car might be built by Bell or Sikorsky. A helicopter will solve almost all of my traffic complaints. Parking will be a bitch, but whatever, I will have a frickin helicopter. I can do what I want.
