Most of us (who are old enough) remember Roy Clark as the cohost of Hee Haw. Say what you will about that often hokey show, they had some damned fine musicians, and Roy Clark was certainly among them. Clark was 85.

We watched that show all the time growing up. My dad had some Roy Clark 8 tracks. I used to love listening to Under the Double Eagle, Foggy Mountain Breakdown, and Orange Blossom Special, three instrumentals in a row.

When I was young (mid-70s), there were only two things to watch on TV on Saturday night: Mid-Atlantic Championship Wrestling, and Hee-Haw. So my brother and I sat in the kitchen and watched them both. Hee -Haw is now in reruns on GetTV, and I’ll tune in occasionally. As I said, the humor is corny, as is the canned laugh track, but there are some truly stellar performers and top-shelf backing bands. Buck Owens was no slouch, either.

If it weren’t for bad luck I’d have no luck at all.....

This was always one of my favorite skits:

Dang. Honestly I figured the guy was already dead. My folks were fans of both kinds of music (Country AND Western) when I was a kid, so although it wasn’t my thing, I saw a lot of Hee Haw. Mr. Clark could play .   RIP, sir.

I realized a few minutes after posting that there were more than one set of chops on view in that video. I love it when a plan comes together.

When I was a kid I once saw Roy Clark live at the Bay Pines veteran’s hospital in St. Petersburg. I was expecting just Grand Old Opry, but style-wise he was all over the map, everything from Segovia to the Beatles; he could play anything. It was one Hell of a show!

RIP, you master musician.

If not underrated, certainly under appreciated. I don’t think he got the respect he deserved.
