They’re gahbage!
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
What did people this was going to be? A single cab work truck?
That being said...cmon jeep, you couldn’t spec real rear doors?
I will say Im impressed by the towing and payload figures...that’ s going to make it interesting against the standard bearer in the off road midsize truck market - the tacoma - which kinda lags there. Plus the diesel bit.
Anyone want to have a civil discussion about it?
Mallcralwer, FCA, fake truck, baja. Have I got them all out?
![]() 11/14/2018 at 18:04 |

I’m also not a fan of the rear doors, or the overlapping rear flares with the body/box. Will there be no flex? That was one aspect of the many renders that I thought people got wrong.
People pretend to want the resurgence of midsize trucks, as long as they don’t have four doors.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 18:06 |

What’s wrong with the rear doors?
![]() 11/14/2018 at 18:06 |

If there’s one undebatable thing that Jeep does exceptionally well, it’s know and cater to their market. Wrangler pickup, removable hard/soft top, 3l diesel, manual transmission available, solid axles, and if the Rubicon package is available- electronic sway disconnects and e-lockers? I mean, damn. What a vehicle.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 18:07 |

Yeah, that’ s strange I didn’t even notice the fenders.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 18:07 |

how come they couldn’t be bothered to finish them?
![]() 11/14/2018 at 18:09 |

for reals. If it wasn’t for the FCA bit...
ah poop
![]() 11/14/2018 at 18:09 |

Sorry, not sure I understand.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 18:11 |

I believe he’s referring to the odd angle at which the lower door is cut on the non-hinge side. It makes sense on the Wrangler Unlimited because the wheels are there, but it looks a bit odd to have such a small/short door on a crew cab pickup. Likely, FCA is trying to reuse parts or made an odd stylistic decision.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 18:11 |

That.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 18:12 |

The commentary covered all the tropes in just the first dozen goes . Impressive.
The payload is ‘just’ acceptable but typical of the segment (and understandable given the off road chops it is supposed to have) while the tow rating is bang on the medium segment.
I look forward to seeing many of these overloaded to the eyeballs on Australian roads in the future.
But I'd also like to see Ram's interpretation.

I just want a single cab standard bed. The bed on this thing is pretty much useless and the whole length of the vehicle is huge. Like 3 feet longer than the already long ass 4-door Wrangler. So it's at least going to be 19 feet nose to tail.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 18:14 |
|
I’m not a truck guy, nor a Joop guy, but I love the whole idea of this. However...
I will say that that the truck *appears* to have compromised a bit much. Like “we have to fit 4 doors and we have to fit a bed, but here’s our max wheelbase and overall length”. Looks like they should have made the doors bigger, maybe extended the cab a couple inches, and extended the rear overhang a bit?
That said, more small/mid-sized pickup trucks is a good thing, full stop.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 18:15 |

are they carried over from the regular wrangler 4 door? It’s cost cutting. I get it but it should be usable space under the seat. But it may keep crap from falling out.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 18:18 |
|
I love it. Can’t wait to start seeing them locally
Curious to see if a the diesel and manual can be spec'd together
![]() 11/14/2018 at 18:22 |

Hmm, rear doors cut off at a funny angle, you say. Because the original four-door version was a full top, you say.
Surely, though, if one were to make a longer pickup on the same platform, one would develop other doors and... oh.
Come on, Jeep. You’re half-assing your half-assing so hard that British half-assing beat you to it by more than twenty years.

![]() 11/14/2018 at 18:37 |

Will start at 40k, end at 60k+. Will be bought by mostly men as the normal Wrangler is now too feminine. Will sell like crazy. All my thoughts at the moment.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 18:39 |
|
I don’t care for the name. Scrambler was cool and retro. Gladiator sounds... like they’re trying too hard.
I think they’ll sell very well, honestly. Seems like the type thing that would appeal well to deer hunters too.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 18:39 |
|
I like it and would really consider it for my next rig. The towing is impressive but I’m quite suspect on how big the back seat area is.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 18:41 |
|
It’s a small vehicle that can carry bikes in the bed while towing a heavy-ass trailer. And can go out on the sand or up a moderately rough trail. And is a diesel. AND a manual. And probably comes in brown.
It’s like ~87% of what everyone is screaming for. But since it’s going to be popular with Jessica and Clint, well, we’ve gotta hate it.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 18:46 |
|
Got it. But can’t that be considered a “design element” that would be recognizable on such a vehicle? I noticed that, but it didn’t bother me. Of course, I’ll never own one of these either.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 18:47 |
|
I see that, but I recognized that as a Jeep design element. Perhaps that’s what they were going for.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 18:50 |

It’s just as dumb as the wrangler and about as useful.
How am I doing?
![]() 11/14/2018 at 18:51 |

Yah, I think thats exactly the debate on it right me ow.

I go camping with my boys once per month. Currently we use our XJ, but as they are getting bigger the XJ is getting smaller. And I can’t tow the scout trailer with it if needed. I don’t mind throwing dirty camping equipment in the back since it’s old, but a bed sure would be nice. Would love a manual to teach the boys how to drive.
Tacoma - manual + 4x4 - check, bed-check, bit small on the inside.
Colorado/Ranger - no manual, crew cab, 4x4 option
Gladiator- manual + 4x4 + bed + diesel? Sign me up!!!!
![]() 11/14/2018 at 19:07 |

Regarding the rear doors: there are plenty of aftermarket tube doors, half doors, etc. Why would they force everyone (including themselves) to build yet more new doors?
![]() 11/14/2018 at 19:09 |
|
I hope these sell well so I can afford to buy one and cut the cab down a couple doors in a few years...
![]() 11/14/2018 at 19:09 |
|
Gladiator is even retro-er. And the new truck is too long to scramble.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 19:10 |

The legroom on the JLU is relatively good, and this is the same.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 19:10 |

Nope, at least not on the JL Wranglers, so probably not here either . Jeep has said it’s a size problem.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 19:11 |

I want to see the oppo version that is a 2 door single cab with a 6-foot box, manual, and Diesel engine. Offered in left wheel drive.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 19:12 |
|
But seriously it looks well executed and it’s going to sell like hot cakes.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 19:12 |

... as the normal Wrangler is now too feminine.
ffs
![]() 11/14/2018 at 19:14 |

I hope so. I’ll need room for a couple of car seats. I find with my F150 it can be a bit overkill at times. Yeah I can haul and tow but I’m finding lately I could use something scaled down.

We should be talking about it being a convertible truck more.
Top down, doors off and with the windshield down its gonna look silly (in a good way) going down the road.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 19:33 |
|
I think it’s ugly and stupid (does the top come off? if so, we’ll take about 3% off the stupid because that’s just neat). I’m sure they’ll sell a million of them.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 19:37 |
|
Ahh. I was unaware. Cool?
![]() 11/14/2018 at 19:46 |

I think I need to write up a post on Jeep trucks. Even Andrew Collins, at the auto show where the JL was unveiled, made a comment on camera about Jeep never having made full-sized pickup trucks.
(I’ll admit, before I got into the Jeep community I was unaware too.)
![]() 11/14/2018 at 19:54 |

I can’t imagine the gearbox is up to the torque either. Plus some stupid emissions thing to... Probably.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 19:54 |

![]() 11/14/2018 at 20:01 |

But... No one actually buy s single cab. Everyone says they want one but when push comes to shove is always at least access cab. There are plenty of non joop trucks already with long beds. This is a jlu... With a bed.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 20:02 |

This is so true. Diesel Rubicon with color matched hardtop is going to be very very pricey.

![]() 11/14/2018 at 20:08 |

I just worry where the Tacoma tops out ( price wise) the gladiator will start at. I mean, sure you could get a stripped S with a soft top, and no interior features with the 3.6... Or you could get a Tacoma trd off road. Well see how they price it but I’m betting it won’t be cheap.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 20:12 |
|
Entirety of...the truck? The commentary? The weird doors? The current socio-political environment?
![]() 11/14/2018 at 20:14 |
|
I’m in for trading in my pickup on one if I can get it in a diesel / manual / Rubicon version for < $50k.
That said, it looks exactly as expected - Basically an AEV Brute with JL styling. They will sell the crap out of these @ MSRP as well.
It’s already ahead of the Tacoma out of the box with 2 solid axles, 4 coil springs, and 4 disc brakes. Plus removable roof & doors. I wonder if there will be a way to stack the doors and roof in the bed so that you don’t need to leave them behind? That would be neat.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 20:14 |
|
Entry. Thank s phone
![]() 11/14/2018 at 20:14 |
|
I absolutely love it. I assume it’ll be priced like a Wrangler Unlimited + ~$3k. So a base Gladiator Sport will be $35k, and a Rubicon will be $45k. Want a diesel? Another $3k.
I still think they’re going to sell them as fast as they can build ‘em.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 20:16 |
|
Do we know the truck is coils? I wonder how the rear differs because it has a lot more payload... Something changed.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 20:19 |
|
I am one of the dozen or so prospective truck buyers looking for a single cab, regular bed, 4x4, manual truck. I don’t have a family to haul to Wally World, I don’t have a boat or toys to haul, I don't want a leather interior and infotainment, I just want a good honest truck. So my only options anymore are the Nissan Frontier, the Toyota Tacoma or something old which I'll probably get.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 20:21 |
|
It’s either based on the Wrangler or Ram 1500 rear end, both of which use coils. Doesn’t make sense to engineer leaf springs.
Plus, look closely at the pic you posted. That’s a control arm on the rear axle
, not a leaf.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 20:24 |
|
Is the fact that the wheel base is a quarter mile going to hamper its off road ability?
![]() 11/14/2018 at 20:26 |
|
Needs more 8' bed. We have the 6' whatever bed in our work Ram, and it’s too short.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 20:26 |
|
I think your right. They you realize that you can get a pretty well equipped Tacoma or Colorado or frontier or ranger for 35.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 20:36 |
|
The prices are going to be eye popping. Like F150 King ranch quad cab numbers, then it’s gonna get picked apart by the comparisons, they same way people put the ranger against the base F150, even though they’re different.
Then the buyers will all be existing Wrangler customers, Jeep will cut it after 1 extended generation, and everybody will wax nostalgically about it while buying their third F150.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 20:40 |

Ah. Honestly I haven’t tried. I’m still rocking a 2-door unlimited.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 20:45 |

I can’t wait to not buy one.
New Bronco/Everest is at the top of my “I don’t have any money but I’d purchase one” list currently. I really like what Ford is trying to do with the Ranger is even though I’m not a Ford guy.
Gonna be a billion of these on the road tho. Show us the Dakota!
![]() 11/14/2018 at 20:47 |

I agreed we had a Chevy 2500 with a 6’ bed and a tool box, fucking worthless.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 20:49 |

There is a diesel 4 door Colorado at our local chevy dealership for 31k, gawld I wish I had 31k to blow right now.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 20:54 |
|
Hamper, sure, but they were on the Rubicon Trail recently, and it’s not terribly forgiving of long wheelbases, so they’re clearly not incapable.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 21:04 |
|
I think people get to... Hung up ( sorry/ not sorry)... on wheelbase. Sometimes it hurts you, sometimes it helps. People get to worried about it. Truthfully is really more a turning circle thing than anything else. And that’s not a big deal
![]() 11/14/2018 at 21:11 |
|
Sad thing is, idk if it’s sad or not really, that I’d really like one of these but the new market is priced crazy high and the used market is even crazier for wranglers.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 21:22 |
|
Even for the FP, I was shocked how negative those comments were.
I think they'll sell every single one of these they can screw together, and the resale value will be batshitcrazypants.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 21:25 |
|
I know for a fact that t he Tacoma is not available anymore in a single cab. I'm too lazy to look up the Frontier, but I have never seen a single cab of those either.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 21:30 |
|
So apparently you can only get an extended or four door cab Frontier, so there are no options. Fucking sucks.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 21:33 |

Only the full sizers offer a regular cab short bed. First gen Colorados wer e the perfect small truck size. The regular cabs were way roomier than those of the S-10/Ranger.

Toyota isn’t immune either
it bugs me here too...but it’ s really not too big a deal. It just looks like cost cutting which for how much they are going to charge for these...kinda stings.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 22:43 |
|
but honestly, who’s cross shopping this with anything with an 8-foot bed. people who are buying these are buying them as Jeeps first and trucks 2nd.

![]() 11/14/2018 at 22:51 |

yup, looks like coils. What I also mean is what rear axle, the D44 isn’t really a strong axle, 3500 gawr i think.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 22:54 |
|
I can’t see it would be much worse than this.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 22:56 |
|
Yeah the FP was bad. now keep in mind re:payloads that ours are way different here than there. 1600 lbs for a midsizer is pretty good, the tacoma only has 1200 in its off road form. some full sizers don’t offer 1600 in some trims. Partly for ride, partly because of different rating means.
![]() 11/14/2018 at 22:57 |

I don’t know man. truck sales are hot and wrangler sales are hot. I don’t see how this could lo se for Jeep.

I would suggest that actual phantom wheelwells are much more tacky than mere not-actually-wheel-shaped missing corners. But then, Toyota. When they half ass, they use the whole ass and cut meticulously to fit, prompting outcries of “why?” and “wasn’t there a half ass left over from something?” and occasionally “my ass!”
![]() 11/15/2018 at 00:22 |

I guess. I feel like the trucks they have now are cutting it. There are few places the extra capability would be handy but it’s not like a half ton with mud terrains don’t get it done

I really like it and it’s exactly what I was expecting . I think too many people are getting hung up on the “truck” part, this is a Jeep first, truck second. Sure a longer bed would make it more useful, but it will also make it a worse Jeep, if you need a bigger box there are other options out there. Now we need to see the Bronco, by the time these two hit I’ll probably be in a position to buy a new vehicle and these are very high on the list.
![]() 11/15/2018 at 09:58 |
