99 E55 Amg, 154K miles. Keep in mind this is at an auction where you can look over the cars but not start or drive them. They are driven through the auction area though at time of sale. They claim it runs but they also mislabeled it so who knows. The majority of these cars at this auction are charity donations so people can get a tax break.

I’m guessing it will go for $2000 or less, worth the chance for a good time?

Think I’d be in for a max bid of $1k, since that comes out to nearly $1.5k with taxes and fees:

Bidders Purchase Price 1000.00

Buyers Premium 12% 120.00

WA. State Sales Tax 10.3% 115.00

Doc Fees Title Transfer 197.00

Subtotal 1432.00

My brother owned one of these (a 2005) and it started to nickle and dime him to death before he sold it. They are reliable; however, they are complicated and finicky. There will always be something broken and they are a pita to work on.

Regardless of purchase price, this thing will cost you at least $10k. If you want a project and are a glutton for punishment (or need youtube content), go for it.

W210 is a different animal than a W211.  A lot less to go wrong on the older cars.  That being said, a lot can still go wrong.

I check out that auction now and then. Lots of sketchy stuff, which makes it fun. I still regret not going after a nice but non-running lower line fintail there a few years ago, I suspect it went for nothing.  There have been a few other MBs I was somewhat tempted by, but I don’t need another mouth to feed.

For this E55, I wouldn’t pay more than a couple grand without being able to drive it - you’ll always be in the red if it needs a transmission, and they will fail on these cars without maintenance.  At least it is a real one, I too see these mislabeled, the wrong way.

I recommend a starting bid of $500 and spend not more than $1500.

That way if it’s a complete un-roadworthy basket case, there is always the autocross/24 hours of lemons option.

I kind of wonder about the maintenance given by an owner whose OK with the “ glaucoma” hazed over headlights.

I’ve bought 2 cars there myself and people I’ve brought along have bought 6 over the last 2 years. We’ve never left with a bad taste in our mouth. They are really bad about their descriptions and labeling.

There have been a few cars I’ve regretted passing on at this auction, mostly a 450SL that was there last year.

That would be a fine use for a basketcase AMG

They will come and start it for you but it takes a while to get them to do it. And they won’t rev it.

They used to allow you to start it yourself and move it back and forth a few inches but people were abusing it.
