For anyone looking to catch up on the saga:
So today, it’s really real. When I sold my S3, I planned to hang on to that money for the next car. You all know how that goes... The good news is that were doing a home renovation that includes a garage! The bad news is that I don’t have enough to buy the 1502 outright.
I kicked around the idea of financing though a bank that finances classic cars, but the terms were all too long and rates too high. Also, most of these companies need the car on US soil before they will cut a check. So I took out a personal loan from my bank.
The only time I have ever had to wait more than a few hours for approval for any loan was when we bought our first house. S o I figured I’d get the loan and have them wire the funds in a matter of minutes. Wrong! They wanted a bunch of info that they asked for sporadically over the past week, and didn’t tell me that I was approved until today! Being an anxious person I began to think the worst. I even had a nightmare about it last night.
“Mr. Tripper, this is your bank calling. We’re calling to let you know that your loan has been denied and put into a death grinder (actual words used by my sleeping brain) and that we have also entered your information into a database of all financial institutions worldwide so that you can never try to re-apply!”
Anyway, it’s all good. The bank said that they have to do extra homework to approve unsecured loans. Whatever, just lemme get this car!
Side note - The people at the bank think I’m nuts (not incorrect) . The guy I have been working with says, “Mr. Tripper, I’m a little nervous for you...” I said “I know that it’s hard to understand but cars are my passion.” I brought up a picture of the car on my phone and turned it around for him to see. His eyes widened and he took the phone and said, “can I” to which I said, “swipe away!” He says, “Jesus man, I can see why you want that, that is a super cool car!”
So all that is done, next step is to coordinate with the shipping company. They have been awesome , very responsive to emails. They call when they need to really good experience so far.
I figured I might as well call my insurance company as I would like it insured from the moment it rolls off the boat/the moment the insurance from the shipping company ends.
Turns out it’s really easy. I thought that I might have to have it appraised, but they just want to know what I would list it for if I was to sell it state side and will insure it for that amount.
The only bummer thus far is that I don’t think that there is a way for me to get a temporary tag, so it will still be a few weeks, maybe a month before I can drive it after it gets here. Small potatoes, it probably wont be great driving weather anyway. This also means that I’ll have to rent a covered trailer and go get it... I’m a little nervous about that but I may have to do it.
More to come, and happy Wednesday!

As I mentioned, wait till it hits the shores to get the temp tag.
Now, here’s what you need to get the temp tag in most states (for imports, you go by state of registration and titling NOT port of arrival!)
Title to the vehicle
Driver’s License
Proof of Insurance
And that’s it. Temp tags are temporary so you could probably get a set for a fruit in any state. Hell, you can usually get temp tags before title conversion is completed, since you need them to get a VIN inspection.

PA Wants the customs paperwork before they’ll issue a tag and registration:(

Sorry I miss read that. I’ll wait til it gets here, but the guy at the tag place said that the tag has to come from H arrisburg and takes 2-3 weeks, maybe he was talking about the official tag.

Oh! Neat! I’m actually familiar with PA; spent some time there.
Yes, you have to wait on the customs paperwork for PA, since they consider that part of the title process. It usually takes 2-3 weeks for the official plates to come after you do all the paperwork to get a registration for anything “unusual ,” but temp tags should still be issued same-day by the local office.
So for PA, specifically what you need:
Proof of Insurance (and not just storage insurance); card and declarations page
Completed f orm MV-351 (application for temporary registration)
PA driver’s license or MV-8
Your completed MV-11 if applying for Antique/Classic/Collectible
Completed customs paperwork
Title (original!)
Cash for the fee, a whole $ 5
Yourself
There may also be an additional form to fill out regarding safety/emissions inspections, but it varies, so have the BMV tell you which it is. I don’t remember all the exemption rules. If you go in person, you get the temporary tags same day. If you go by mail, it takes 2-3 weeks.

Oh cool! That still sounds like a trailer it home, then get the tags situation as I doubt I will be able to get the customs paperwork via email.

Negative on that, my man! Car does not need to be present, only you and the paperwork. Grab paperwork, go to BMV office, get handed temporary tags. Take tags to dock, stick on car, drive home. :)

Right, but, the thing is you don’t need the car in hand to get temp tags. Just the paperwork. (Otherwise, temp tags wouldn’t work.) IIRC should receive the customs paperwork by FedEx (though varies by broker) since the parts PA wants to see, you need to present to the port when you go to pick it up. (It serves as a temp TWIC, required to access the port to pick up the car .)

Indeed! Also, DO NOT SHOW UP WITH SOMEBODY ELSE’S TRAILER IF THEY ARE NOT WITH YOU. VERY IMPORTANT.
Port security does not fuck around these days and they are not the TSA (who is a total joke .) They will inspect your shit. They will really inspect your shit. Paperwork will be examined including the registration of the towing vehicle AND the trailer. If the owner isn’t you or isn’t there? Yeaaaaaah, you’re gonna have a problem. (Only exception is professional haulers or other people with permanent TWICs.)

Good to know im going to do my best to drive it home. Any idea how pickup works? I have to show up the day it gets there correct? Just show em the papers and pick it up, or more than that?

Oh no, do NOT show up the day it arrives on the boat. In fact, plan on at least 3-5 business days after the boat arrives depending on the port activity and backlog. The shipper handling things is the people to check with there though , as they’ll have a good idea how long it takes to unload and go through customs. RoRo is usually quicker than that, but if it’s RoRo bulk or containerized, it can be a while.
The shipper’s also the ones who will know what you need to bring and when , because it depends on how they operate things on their side. Some of them actually bring the vehicles to their own storage facilities. Others just plop them down in the yard and “hey, come pick up your car.” And still others expect you to have arranged a trailer with a TWIC authorized operator in advance. It’s up to them and there’s no problem with any of these, it’s just a different procedure. They’ll be the best ones to advise you on exactly what you need to do to pick it up.
However, you should always assume that you will need to pass through TWIC. Whether or not the vehicle is in a high security area. Getting to less secure areas often requires passing through some form of security. Plus if you get turned around and stopped at a security checkpoint? Yeah. Backing up and turning around is not going to happen. You’re gonna get checked before they let you GTFO again.
