ULTIMATE BREAKING MACHINE

After battling not one, but two fasteners puncturing a tire (thank you rampant, gluttonous development), and replacing said tire on Monday, I’m greeted with a SES Light this morning.

Based on the way it’s running (good) probably an evap leak somewhere. Just fixed an evap leak earlier this year, at the lower intake hose.

It’s actually been a great car, but it’s needier than anything I’ve owned thus far.

“These cars are very reliable. I’ve almost driven 66,000 miles and only two dozen things have broken in that time.”

‘ German Reliability’ is the biggest oxymoron in the history of automobiles.

I was getting a code for an evap leak on my wife’s X1. Was smelling fuel on fillup, so I figured it was the gas cap (original with 111k miles) or the vent hose for the pump autostop. I had to get the emissions tested, so I did the cap first and reset the codes. Light never came back and I passed the emissions test, so I figured I was gtg. Last weekend I get rhe same code again...

It’s at the dealer niw for a leaky radiator that they replaced in January when it was still under warranty.

Like the people who say their car is reliable, then say they’ve got 30k miles without issue.

Come back in another 170k miles and tell me how that’s going.

Oppo just about has me cured of my life long admiration of BMWs. I think I read too many Car & Drivers in the late 80s and their gushing corrupted me.

I see manual, low mile E90s off lease and think “hey, maybe...” then see stuff like this.

The German’s just need to have all of their rubber and plastic components made by the Japanese.

It’s honestly not that bad. But it is QUITE annoying. My wife, who is not a car person, gives me death stares every time the car needs something, which is like every other month.  She’s used to Toyotas that run for the distance to the moon with the occasional oil change or set of tires.

about 7,000 miles since I’ve owned it, two SES lights, one set of control arm bushings, one Michelin PSS (not anyone’s fault, just bad luck and too much develop ment here), and the yellow oil light comes on periodically.  I mean it’s 13 years old, I kind of knew what I was getting into, and was about 70% prepared for this.

It’s alright, I so badly wanted a manual E91 but given some of the maintenance and cosmetics I’ve already done on a fancy Japanese car, I’m pretty sure I would have struggled to keep the E91.

To this day my favorite car to drive was my E39 540 6 speed. Loved that car. But could not deal with the constant little maintenance items when I need a reliable car daily.  If I didn't have work to get to and kids to pick up it would be a different story.

Given that the e91 only came with NA engines, it would have been a relatively safe choice as BMW’s go. I shied away from e9x because of the expensive battery replacements, but also because I’m an e46 fanboy.  TBH I wanted a newer mustang or camaro, but the wife politely requested something with 4 doors since we have a kid on the way.

What did you move on to?  I don’t think I could go back to a “normal” car, I need something with at least the pretense of performance.  e39 M5 is one of my top 5 dream cars, but I don’t have deep enough pockets to run it every day.

That was m any cars ago...I swung the pendulum back the other direction and went with an Acura TL.

One day (after the kids are out of the house and college) I will find an Estoril Blue E39 M5 a nd it will be mine....Darn you, don't make me go straight to Autotrader and start looking.

You can program the batteries yourself using a phone app called Carly. Also, because of the smart alternators, the batteries last a very long time. The factory battery lasted six years on my wife’s X1. I’m in Phoenix, and usually go through batteries every three years on most cars.

I had a couple of those. First one had the $900 fuel pump die on my way home and left me stranded.

The last one I owned was perfect. I bought it from the second owner who bought it from CarMax with the bonkers warranty. Everything was perfect. I didn't even have a dead pixel on the dash.... Until the hit and run.
