We have a few things that are made in Italy. This lawn mower for instance. But it’s the new shelving system that finally has learnt me about made in Italy.

Kinja'd!!!

Just look at all those folds and punches just to make the shelf rail!

Why is it that so many of the things that are both designed and made by Italians are beautifully done, insanely over complicated, surprisingly functional but in an unexpected way, frustrating to work on and still often cheaper than a similar German product?

This shelving system is made entirely from thin galvanised sheet steel that has been formed, folded, pressed and punched through many steps to produce a limited range of components that, when assembled, produce very light, very strong and not unattractive shelves.

Kinja'd!!!

Assembly requires just a dead blow hammer...and the patience of a saint. It’s as fiddly and unergonomic as sex in the back seat of a Ferrari. The YouTube assembly video is hilarious in hindsigh t.

Italy makes great things but they do have a habit of making questionable decisions on their way to making some really interesting products...

Kinja'd!!!

Of course they printed their brand name on the product upside down...

Things are made in places that aren’t China?

A surprising amount of product is made in Italy.

Like most of the planets supply of name brand eyewear frames and a significant proportion of the world's production of dishwashers, front loading washing machines and cookers.  Not to mention a few cars...

A significant proportion of the world’s cruise ships are built by Fincantieri in Italy.

I’d like to know more about that lawn mower. Specifically, what’s up with that lawn mower?

" so many of the things that are both designed and made by Italians are beautifully done, insanely over complicated, surprisingly functional but in an unexpected way, frustrating to work on and still often cheaper than a similar German product"

As a former Alfa Romeo owner, this perfectly describes the Italian design and construction ethos.

Our espresso percalator was made in Italy. The threads are not perfect, but neither were the threads of the Chinese one in th e store. The Italian one is much better quality. I am not aware of anything else I own being Italian.

Italy has a large manufacturing sector. In my experience the quality is generally good, with a few quirks occasionally.

It's the quirks that are the key...

Is good? Somewhat traumatic to put up but the finished product seems worth the money.

Actually, quite a lot of agricultural machinery is made in Italy. My Zetor (Czech engine and chassis) has a transaxle manufactured by Carraro, which also makes tranaxles for CNH (which also has large production facilities in Italy, and isnpart of the FIAT empire ), Agco, and SAME/Deutz-Fharr. A surprising number of the hay implements sold world wide under various brands come from Italy, especially rakes and tedders and small round balers. Italy also makes tons of blow-molded plastics, perhaps you’ve heard of Acerbis? (the fuel tanks on both my Zetor and BMW motorcycle are made buy Acerbis.)

Absolutely you should. I’ve never seen one and want to know about it.
