It feels so much better than the KC-135 hangar it was in. Not just because it’s (way) nicer, but because it’s the right scale. It felt tiny over there, here it’s feels big and powerful like it should.

The amount of effort and man hours involved in the restoration and maintenance are truly staggering. Spare parts rarely exist and the stories about finding pieces and/or documents are unreal.

I know some people who work with the CAF in Georgia the parts acquisition stories are legendary. 2 years tracking down a part that ended up being in someone’s basement or found at an estate sale.

The tail turret on Doc was being used as a doghouse in some dudes backyard in Colorado. He saw that they didn’t have one, so he called the guy in charge of the restoration. They drove from Wichita to Colorado that same night to go get it.

Similar stories about the restoration of the only (soon to be) airworthy F-82 Twin Mustang:
Reilly’s team, based in Douglas, Georgia, was able to make good progress because of some staggering good luck, like stumbling upon a left-hand turning Merlin engine (the XP-82’s two propellers are counter-rotating) in Mexico City, and finding a fuselage piece owned by a guy who would only give it up in trade—for a nearly impossible-to-find windshield that Reilly just happened to have.
The whole tale of the restoration can be found here , and it’s quite a read. With lots of NSFW pictures.
