Didn’t see that one coming...
Later this month at the Los Angeles auto show, Toyota will be releasing an updated 2019 Prius hybrid that will likely be available with all-wheel drive. The hint comes from a Toyota press release issued today saying that the 2019 Prius “performs on roads whether snowy or clear,” and the accompanying image pictures a Prius driving down a snow-covered road.

Those dam Whole Food parking lots are obviously getting more in touch with nature

Makes perfect sense as far as I’m concerned. Take a practical car and make it practical for even more people, plus being able to do regen braking with all 4 wheels is probably beneficial.

About time. Might actually get me interested in one. Toyota Prius TRD Rally. That would be sweet.

Mind you, they already had this in Japan, it launched with the Gen 4 there. I am surprised they’re bringing it here , though.
That said, with 5.3 kW (7.1 hp) , it’s a get-you-unstuck thing, not a performance thing.

They want to do one before Subaru does.

Are you kidding? Does anyone actually care about the drive type of the Prius?

Subaru already did one with the 1st Gen Crosstrek.

Will it be called the Prius 4, Prius Four, Prius IV, or Prius Cross?

I would argue that a Crosstrek (even if hybrid) and a fwd Prius are very different vehicles with different missions . Nevertheless, it was pretty much forgettable - was criticized b y everyone for being slower, much heavier and not that much more efficient than the regular one for the premium you paid and could never even touch the P rius even if you wanted to compare them.
Coincidentally I searched for it just now and surprise surprise! Subaru is releasing the new Crosstrek Plugin Hybrid that is supposed to be leagues ahead.

Now, this vs. AWD prius will be an interesting cross-shopping option

Yea thats all I thought it was going to be. Electric motor in the back, sell a bu nch to the “I need AWD” types in northern states.

T angent from wafflesnfalafel’s post: g iven that Toyota owns 20% of subaru, and the cross platform sharing they already have I wouldn’t be shocked if this is shared with Subaru.
would also help Subaru lower their cafe rating.

The only surprising thing here is the distinct lack of plastic body cladding in that teaser shot.

Oh don’t you worry a n “ Adventure ” version to take on Subaru is coming.
