Keep in mind none of this is official, but I’ve heard reports that well over 100 people have died in the Camp Fire.

Kinja'd!!!

I have a professor whose family lives/lived in Paradise who have talked with numerous law enforcement officers who have said that hundreds have died in their cars while trying to escape the fire. A majority of those missing are thought to be dead, it’s just a matter of identifying them. They haven’t made official reports yet because they are still finding bodies, but expect a release soon.

It’s truly a shame, the speed and intensity of the fire has made it one of the worst forest fires in the past 100 years.

Rest in peace to all those who have passed and my deepest condolences to those who lost loved ones. Possessions can be replaced, people can’t.

That’s horrifying, droughts and wild fires make a very dangerous situation.

Damn, this is just terrible. I have ridden my bike through there numerous times. It’s not a that rural town either, it’s normal streets and houses and such. It just amazes me how powerful the wind and fire actually were that blew through.

I’ve been wondering about all the cars burned out on the road. Such a terrible tragedy.

that’s good to hear. I know my professors family was spared and from what they’ve heard, their house is still standing untouched while the rest of the neighborhood is gone

I’ve been worried about this since I saw all those burned out cars along roads. It just doesn’t seem like people would be able to exit those cars and escape.

I really hope it turns out to be not that bad.  Somehow.  Awful.

The NYT said, “Hearses are standing by.” And spare a thought too  for the first responders and others who have to recover those remains.

Heartbreak does not even begin to cover it. Trying to figure out how I can help, maybe spend a couple of days up there volunteering . Malibu is much closer, and that’s bad, but Paradise just punches me right in the gut. It’s just so, so sad. I fear the news will only get worse before it gets better.

As bad as it is...it will happen again somewhere. Greece faced a similar situation just a few months ago.

And it has happened to a number of towns and fringe suburbs of both Canberra and Sydney over the years in Oz as well...

And I sit here in a house surrounded by the Australian bush...two years into a very impressive drought.

The Toyota story mentioned that the people trapped in the cars were evacuated, so here’s hoping.
