If you have not been able to tell yet. I bought a 2015 Volkswagen Touareg TDI. For me this has always been a halo car. There just isn’t anything else quite like it made.
I knew it was now or never for me if I was going to get one. Since Volkswagen discont in u ed the TDI model in 2016 and the Touareg all together in 2017 (in the US Market) , I knew I didn’t have long if I wanted a good one. And there was one final thing that pushed me over the edge on buying it. a 2 year UNLIMITED MILE bumper to bumper CPO warranty from Volkswagen. When I found the one I wanted, I decided to trade in the Golf TDI on it and bring home the Touareg.
This one is a 2015 that I bought with 32,000 miles back in September. It is in near perfect shape because it is CPO and was a lease before I picked it up. And of course it has plenty of cool options like the big sunroof and all, but the only option I really wanted was that sweet sweet diesel.
The Golf and Jetta TDI’s I have had prior to this felt like they had a lot of torque for a small car with 240 lb-ft of the good stuff. The Toureg on the other hand just has a lot of torque period. It is a 3.0l V6 Turbo Diesel with 240hp and 405 lb-ft. That just shows how much we have progressed considering my old 7.3l Powerstroke Diesel F-250 had roughly the same horsepower and about 20 more torques. That is seriously impressive.
Now of course that means stellar fuel mileage (for what it is) as well. Around town it does fine, mid to low 20's per gallon, but on the highway it does excellent. It is rated to do 28 mpg on the high way, but on most highway trips I have been getting into the low 30's.
This is a pretty big deal because the current small crossover, the Tiguan with an underpowered 2.0L will supposedly get 27mpg on the highway. And to top it off, I can tow again without borrowing my parents Tacoma. 7700 lb tow rating, which is wonderful.
Anyways I have plenty to say about it, so ask me some questions if you have them.

I’m really jealous. Report back, I may need to find one once the LR dies. How’s the inside compared to the Golf? Does it feel more comfy?

It is much closer to an Audi than a Volkswagen. I'll have to try to take some pictures of all the trim inside to show you what I mean. The road manners are fantastic and it is more comfortable than the golf by a long way.

Kind of blown away that a diesel is only getting “ It is rated to do 28 mpg on the highway but on most highway trips I have been getting into the low 30's.” But I’m more blown away that is ranked as stellar.

I would be disappointed maybe if it was a small car, but this is a 4 wheel drive SUV with a 7700 lb tow rating that still can get over 30mpg. I can't think of anything that can accomplish that.

Acura MDX got the same on gasoline with same towing capacity. There were a couple more but that one came to mind off the bad.
Regardless, you’re happy with it and that’s all that matters. I was just surprised it didn’t get better fuel economy.

I am pretty sure the MDX can only tow 5000 lbs , which is still plenty for most but it would be hard to find someone cracking into 32mpg in an MDX

Sweet ride! A guy I knew in college had a hybrid one (now those are rare!) with the 3.0 from the S4, what an oddball. Anyway, he traded it in for a TDI super quickly so I guess it must not have been all that.
Now that I think about it. The US actually got a surprising amount of diesel SUVs for a bit there. The Q5 and Cayenne with this same engine, the ML and GL, the X5, and the Grand Cherokee.

Yah the hybrid one is super rare ! And I agree there was a short period of deisel SUVs coming in, basically until Volkswagen ruined it for everyone. Basically all German too since the Grand Cherokee still kind of dates back to the Diamiler Chrysler days I think it still has some Mercedes bits

Seems like an excellent family car. How’s the reliability in these?
3.0l V6 Turbo Diesel with 240hp and 405 lb-ft. ALL THE TORQUES!
That plus AWD in the winter should equal

Y u no v10?
Just kidding that things looks awesome, congrats!

From what I know, they are pretty reliable aside from a few small things. Just some of the maintenance is expensive like brakes and such. But luckily no air suspension to worry about

The Touareg has held a special place in my heart basically since they came out. I would love to own one one day, but by the time I’m in the market for one, I doubt they’ll be eligible to be CPO ed anymore. I drive a RX330 with 248k miles on it and it runs like it has 100k miles, so I’m a bit wary to branch out from the Toyota umbrella. But w hen the time comes, a Touareg will definitely be on the list. 33 mpg is insane too! The best I’ve seen on my RX was 25.
I’m really looking forward to more Touareg content. Those pictures of the car are great too!

Yeah, the 2018 MD-X hybrid will get 27 mpg’s overall, according to the EPA, so it may get low 30's in the real world. But the kicker is the hybrid is rated to tow zero pounds. A standard MD-X can tow up to 5,000lbs, but no way in hell would it ever get close to 30 mpg. More like mid to low 20's.

My slightly bigger, slightly heavier Grand Cherokee with a 3.0L diesel.
Welcome to the awkward diesel owners club!

How do you like the diesel GC ? I was curious about those too

Absolutely love it. We seem to be one of the lucky ones but we’re 125k in (bought it brand new) and haven’t had any issues outside of a couple minor emissions problems early on (10k) handled under warranty. Ours is a Limited with the air suspension and even that hasn’t had failure.
Next week it goes in for another oil change/rotation , to change both diff fluids, trans fluid, and fuel filters. Regular upkeep has been all it needs.

That’s great ! I h ad heard some scary stuff about the Eco Diesels but I don’t know anyone personally with one. They still command a pretty good premium over the gas one too

A Touraeg is just a downmarket Cayenne!
That improbably, costs more to insure than the Cayenne.

Thank you, I am looking forward to many years with this one ! And the lighting was just about perfect yesterday morning when I took the pictures that are outside DC

Actually the insurance was more than the golf , but I shopped around for a new insurance company and got it less than it was to insure than my Golf was.

I’m just being amused by the fact that I can get a decent shape Cayenne S for less than a Touringegg.
