So I was looking for some open ear critical listening headphones and I had a few questions. I think I’ve narrowed my choices down to either the sennheiser HD650 or the BeyerDynamic DT990 Pro, but I’m not sure which one would be better. Based on reviews I haven’t been able to find a solid answer with different reviews saying different things. For reference I have a pair of Bose QC35 that I love, so I’m not sure if an upgrade to one of these would even be worse it. Thoughts?

I’ve not really done much comparing with other brands, but we have several sets of  the Senn HD600s (older model) and they’re very good.

If you’re used to the QC35's, DT990 Pros or ATH-M50x or above.

I own HD6xx (Mass drops), HD595's, HD598SE’s and HD700's. I’ve spent some time with DT990 Pro’s and prefer the 6xx to them. I have back to backed the mass drop edition 6xx with 600/650/660's and the 6xx is pretty similar to the 600/660 feel. I highly endorse the 6xx’s but then again you’re going to an open back design where your ears will breath more (I wouldn’t do anything else if your situation allows) so it’ll be a big difference from the QC35's that way anyway. I think you’ll listen to the 6x/650/660 and say that all of them have “less bass” than the QC’s but I think overall they’re all sets I can listen to for hours on end.

hope that helps somewhat, i don’t think you’ll regret anything in the 6 line from senn but I’ve never strayed too far from the brand except when friends pick up other  stuff.

Normally, I would go to theverge.com but they don’t have a complete review of the Sennheisers (although there are some very positive articles) and no review at all of the Beyers.

Hit up Vlad Savov on Twitter, he does their reviews and seems to have a good grip on what’s out there:  https://www.twitter.com/vladsavov

Get the massdrop hd6xx.  They're so choice.

I had the HD650 for a long time and then when they finally crapped out I moved over to the Momentum over ear . I highly recommend those.

Keep in mind those 650s have a 300 Ohm impedance and might require an amp to listen to depending on your source. They could sound too low for your preference.

There are 3 tiers of 990 Pros with different impedance measurements. 32, 80, and 250 .

If you can stand that awful color they used on the Massdrop x Senn 6XX, I’d recommend those and a Schii t Magni , Objective 2, or Fiio E10k amp.
