I don’t post a whole lot (I’m a great lurker!) , but the excitement is high today. My wife and I have both had separate talks with mechanics this year that basically boiled down to “You can spend X times the car’s worth in repairs, or you can sell it”. Her car is an Optra, and I will not shed a single tear for that pile of hot garbage.
However, the other car, is my NB Miata. I love this car like it’s my child, and having a respected mechanic suggest that I sell it was the most depressing news I received all year.
So with 2 out of 3 cars on the chopping block, I jumped at the opportunity to exercise some retail therapy. We’re keeping my Mazda 3, which still proves to be a great daily driver, but I had to quickly destroy any of my wife’s hopes to get a small SUV.
Since we’re 2 people going down to 2 cars, I needed something to drive in the winter. This rules out a soft top convertible (and oh boy did I want an ND2 Miata GS with the sport pack, in Soul Red please ). ND2 RFs were off the table since they appr oach $50,000 CAD. (!!) I made a post griping about the cost disparity years ago, but it appears it was sacrificed to the Kinja Gods, and I can’t find it anymore.
So I did the next best thing, a brand new 2018 BRZ Sport-tech RS. Brought it home on Thursday. I never planned on purchasing a new car at this stage in my life, but my wife was very understanding and she knew how much it meant to me. We were trying to save for a house that has a garage/basement (our current house has neither. Never buy a house that doesn’t have these items. TRUST ME.) , and I slowed that process down considerably by making this purchase.
First and only mod for the foreseeable future is the relocated front plate.
I’m looking forward to many many years of rust-free ownership (pls Subieroo don’t rust pls!). If my gen2 Mazda 3 is anything to go by, I can probably daily this for 10 years.
If anyone wants to buy a project Miata that needs rust repair, here’s the ad, will apply Oppo discount :

Wow... I just checked and that's a huge premium for the RF model. Makes me wonder if it would have been better if they just made it a regular coupe with no retractable roof and instead just offered a sunroof option.

“We were trying to save for a house that has a garage/basement (our current house has neither. Never buy a house that doesn’t have these items. TRUST ME.)“
As somebody who just had their basement flood only 2-3 inches of water and is now looking at 23K in repairs to replace the lower section of walls and all the floors for the sake of preventing mould...
....I would have to disagree on the basement part.

That sucks man. I make it a point to never finish my basements and put everything up on pallets just in case. My current basement has a small river running through whenever we get a hard raid or snowmelt.

Thanks! I made them hunt the colour down from another dealer. I would accept nothing other than blue!

That really blows. I have never lived in an area susceptible to flooding. I believe that ON building code requires sump pumps on all new builds nowadays, regardless of the risk of flooding (someone with experience may correct me here) . My parents had to deal with a flooded basement once about 3 weeks before the sale on the home closed - an absolute nightmare of a situation.
I can tell you though that it really sucks trying to service a furnace while laying on your back with the creepy crawlies around because you have a low crawlspace. Any plumbing/electrical/HVAC service work has a premium rate to work in a crawlspace. On top of that, I have exactly 6sq ft of storage in my entire house because I don’t have a basement/garage to put anything like tools, vacuum, less commonly used items.

Undercoat it and keep the body clean and waxed (especially on the rear quarters near where it meets the bumper) and you’ll be immune to rust.

It doesn’t have to be an area susceptible to flooding to end up with a water-filled basement. One clogged drain, a dead sump pump, or even a disconnected drain pipe will do the trick.

Front subframe rust on the Miata? It’s terminal on mine too but I’ll just keep driving the car into the ground anyways. Probably wouldn’t bother if I needed an engine rebuild ever but for now it’s running strong and performing well as a track car!
Saw the pics of the rocker rust, yeah that’s super common on these. Mine wasn’t nearly that bad but I did repair the rockers and quarter panels. I have more free time than sense lol. Lots and lots of welding!

I can’t even open the hood to change the oil. I’m hoping that someone with more mechanical means can pick it up and do exactly what you’re doing.

I’d make sure to take a look at the front subframe, if that’s not rusted out than the car is much more saveable and probably changes how much it’s worth too. All of my work is likely in vain if my front subframe decides to fall apart at some point. I don’t have the time right now to do more work on it so it would end up killing the project unfortunately.
You can see it just by turning the wheel and looking in, unless you still have all of the plastic bits in the way I guess.

These are fair points. From my story above, my parents were on the short-end of a dead sump.

So the Subaru (my preference
of the Toyobaru twins) replaces the Miata and your wife’s car? What’d she have before?

Wifey has/had a Chevy Optra. It was not sold in the States. It’s a badge-engineered monstrosity out of GM Korea between 2004-2005. The only noteworthy thing about it is that it was featured on “Star in a Reasonably Priced Car” for a season as the Daewoo Lacetti. She’ll be taking over the Mazda 3 - the only solid car we have left! (Outside of the BRZ of course!)

I’m going to be best buds with the dude at the car wash. I just need to delay the inevitable for about...8-10 years?
I hate that Ontario has started adopting that brine-like crap.

Even the base model starts at around 34k before taxes. Once you throw in a few goodies (gotta get dem Brembos) and tax, you’re well into 40k with the soft top.
It’s strange, because the BRZ does not have a massive price gap between USA and Canada pricing, but the Miata does. That said, when you think about where the dollar is, it almost feels like Subaru is throwing us a bone, and Mazda is adjusting the prices accordingly.

Yeah they typically look something like this, it’s about what mine looks like on the drivers side. Honestly mine might be worse lol :
It's super common on the NB because Mazda decided this was safer construction than the way the NA was built. It's basically like paper machete layers of metal and water/salt has a real easy time getting trapped between layers and wreaking havoc. The only real concern is crash safety. The car's structural integrity in a crash is highly compromised like that. It's something I'm willing to accept while driving but I'd never want to sell a car like that to someone else. Part of why I like dailying my Subaru a bit more.. I hope to rebuild that too some day but it's part of why paint has been a low priority for me.
