only compulsory third party

anything else you pay for through other companies e.g RACV, YOUI, AAMI

Just for fun I checked what your car would cost here (Sk, Canada) $ 1141 including basic insurance(vehicle damage, personal injury, and liability).

Meanwhile, in NSW... it’d be $66 rego plus $245 vehicle tax (assuming tare weight of between 976 and 1154 kg) plus your green slip (insurance) plus your pink slip (inspection)...

Trust me...as a former Victorian...you a getting a good deal.

Yep it’d fail...but at least it can still maintain the rage to 800,000 where it is.

And to any other Oppo...this is why Australians don't have lots of beater cars...or even a large fleet of cars.

Holy balls!

We have bi-yearly safety inspections here in Nova Scotia, Canada. Other provinces/territories have yearly ones and yet others have no safety inspections other than on a vehicle purchase (it’s up to the province/territory). Same with smog - some provinces/territories do, some don’t. Ontario does, for example, but no smog/emissions checks here in Nova Scotia.

Registration comes due every 2 years and is proven by a sticker at the top-right of all Nova Scotian license plates. Safety Inspections, also being due every two years are proven by a sticker at the bottom-right corner of the windshield (when looking at the car from the front). I think Registration fees are something like $100-something? Inspections are maybe $50-80 or so?

That’s not much. When I had a 2 litre car the road tax was €859, insurance about €600 and the annual inspection another €55, assuming it passed first time.

This is what freedom looks like:

70$ per year for a 10 year old car.

All handled in 5 minutes with no waiting, no appointment and cheerful service at a small storefront. And, such locations are almost as numerous as barber shops. Need to renew a drivers license? That might take 10 minutes so plan accordingly.

How? Private tag agents, licensed by the state, competing for your business.

No wasting time and resources on inspections and smog either.

Which sucks because your weather actually allows for beater cars that aren’t rusted wrecks.

I also think your government basically wants you all in cities... walking instead of driving. It's like they don't want you to have a car culture at all.

I’ve considered club reg for the MR2. it’s like 90 or so I think, plus a road worthy, plus a VASS certificate, plus a club membership.

Ain’t worth it at least for the first year. Suspect I'd fail due to a scratch on my windscreen.

No-one wants a car culture in this day and age. Culture implies knowledge and experience. That might be dangerous...

I know God forbid...can’t let anyone enjoy anything in life.

Don’t worry after coming for the cars , they’ll eventually come for the bikes ...Just like in Oregon (special extra tax on bikes) or what they’re talking about doing in Colorado (kicking around road tax for bikes) .
