I don’t think I’ve ever even held a PSP or seen one IRL so no.

Why did you buy a PSP in 2018? I have one of the earlier PSPs still, it was pretty neat like 8 years ago in college lol. I havent touched it in years but it was an excellent platform to run pokemon emulators and PS1 games natively. Pokemon Red and Tony Hawks Pro Skater 1 were my primary use for that thing. I had cut my teeth with custom rom hacks on that thing, it was fun before decent affordable smart phones were a thing.

I had a PSP-1000 but got rid of it years ago. I wanted to get one to mod and put a bunch of emulators and classic games for when I travel - just to have in conjunction with my phone and tablet. I like physical buttons. And the Vita seems like a pain to mod, so I figured, “Why not?”

I had one as well, wish I had kept it now that I have this plan to use it for classic game emulation/roms for when I travel but would prefer physical buttons.

Honestly the PSP is still the more impressive handheld, but that’s because SONY just bailed the fuck out of the Vita. The Nintendo Switch would be sweating bullets had the Vita been developed more and reached PS4 power on the size of an iPad Mini.

Now go search of Tarakanovich Wendy for an antidote.

Oh yeah I get it, it just seems funny to me since that thing was incredibly outdated even when I got it in high school in 2008. But yeah modding it was all sorts of fun. Modded out my OG Xbox around the same time too. Modern tech now though just works. Android and modern game systems seem to just natively do everything I was trying to do then except faster and cheaper. I'd still love a PSP with like 4gb of ram though lol.

My main gaming machine in college was a Star Wars white PSP that I removed the branding from.
Loved tinkering with it and ps1 classics were so cheap. d oubled as a cheap music player
I got one with a broken screen now that needs fixing. I’m loosely trying to find the colored ones.

I’d love to have one with upgraded internals too. I wish it were possible.

My original one, purchased the day they were released, was the standard black. When I decided yesterday I wanted one again, I was looking at other colors but they kept ending up being imports, so the buttons were mapped differently - or they’d sell too quickly - so I figured I’d just go with the white.
I enjoyed messing with my old one too, before I got bored and got rid of it. Looking forward to
modding one all over again.

That would be something. Ah, if only...
I loved my original PSP, but eventually got bored of it and sold it. Now I’m wishing I had it again, so, here were are.

I got a black one that has some weird custom firmware on it. Sounds are changed and everything is weird. I’m having trouble figuring out how best to get it back to factory or a better firmware with all the info on them being nearly a decade old at this point

If it’s the Infinity hybrid firmware, there’s a downgrade tool
you can download/install via pc I think
. If it’s Pro C2, I believe there’s a way to downgrade. Either way, I’d start
here
. I have the 6.61 OFW on my computer
I believe, if you need.

Big psp fan
back in the day. Own a couple of them including an old fat 1000 from the early days. Probably wouldn't be playing monster hunter world now if not for the psp, nobody would

I had the 1000 fat as well. Sold it, probably, a decade ago. I really liked the PSP and just kind of felt like getting another yesterday. So, here we are. Should be arriving this coming week.

Excellent. If you haven’t played Monster Hunter Freedom I’d recommend it. The learning curve is pretty real but it’s a great game.
Also Archer Mclean’s Mercury was a good early hit for the thing. Such a weird world, one that smartphones came and just destroyed.

Thanks for the recs, I’ll look into those. Monster Hunter Freedom is one that I’ve seen on a number of ‘best of’ lists I believe. I’ve never been the biggest fan of RPG, but I’ll give anything a shot once.

Yeah it’s incredible. It was more popular in Japan than the west, but it sold PSPs. It might have made the console. It’s mostly an action game. Do yourself a favor and don’t skip the tutorial parts, or you won’t understand how the weapons work ;)

So here’s a question...what replacement battery do you use? The one that came with the system, and another I bought absolutely will not charge after dying. I’m going to order a different one to try, but in the meantime am going to get a power bank to run off of for now.
Otherwise, I love the PSP so much.

I don’t really play it so I don’t know. I did buy a replacement battery at some point. But unofficial batteries always have that nagging chance that they might catch fire.
IIRC my original battery gets poor life so if I were to play it, it would be on the replacement.
The fact that it can work straight off the adapter even if you remove the battery is damn cool. It’s something phones/laptops/everything that came later was unable to do.

I bought a USB to DC cable and have been playing it that way (using my computer or USB wall brick). And after reading up about the batteries, I’m just going to forego batteries all together and get a good power bank. Not ideal, but still portable in that regard.
