I thought Mtn Dew was already high octane. The guy bought the cheapest 2 liter stepped 2 feet out the door and sprayed the drink everywhere like he had just won a race and then filled it with gas and ran away.

That could be too. I actually pulled into a Texaco with a full service island here in Dallas  last Saturday. I was floored. The last one I saw not in Jersey was a Sunoco in upstate NY almost 30 years ago.

I was filling a tiny canister of fuel for a camp stove once, and I asked (had to prepay) to put 10 cents on pump 1 or whatever. The cashier was like, “umm where are you going to put that, exactly?” I held up the little canister, and they just shook their head, but let me do it anyway.

Lots of stations around me that aren’t pre-pay, in fact I can’t think of one that is pre-pay (when paying inside) . I get the point of pre-pay, but I absolutely hate it. I f you make me come inside to pre-pay, I’ll just pay for my gas at the pump and you can lose out on the business of the snacks and drinks I was planning to come inside to buy.

Some states (like IL) do post-pay. We were prepay for a while but it was a clustertruck of a mess for everyone.

There are a bunch here in MA. In some cases that’s because the municipality still requires full-serve only, in others its because they exempt stations from costly safety equipment if they are full-serve only.

Seeing stations that have both types is pretty rare though. Did run into one of those somewhere recently, but it’s unusual.

Al ways feels like a bit of a trap when I run into a full-serve station/pump though.

If you don’t mind me asking, how does self-serve work for you? Are you able to pump your own gas (without a ton of hassle)? If you get help from an attendant, does the intercom process or whatever they have actually work well, or are you stuck waiting forever for clerks to actually free up and take notice?

A lot of people pay cash around here. It seems a good number of pumps in the area are infected with card skimming software (or just straight up borked) so people don’t trust them. However, with prepay-only stations you have to guesstimate how much petrol you need, pay the attendant, pump...get your estimation wrong, then go back in to get change.

Don’t you need an appropriate container for gasoline.... not for purposes of following law alone. The gasoline will melt that plastic in a hurry and then you have gasoline everywhere but inside that bottle

This particular station had the two islands, self on the outside and full on the inside. Yes, unusual, especially in Texas. I even saw uniformed attendants standing out there. But the traditional hefty upcharge for full was in effect as well, so I didn’t use it. I think it had to do with being in the upscale Highland/Un iversity Park area where people have extra money.

I just pull up and leave a little extra room to get out of the car. Then I do it like everyone else. They have those intercom things most of the time, but I don’t see how I could reach them without getting out anyway. So, I’ve never bothered. Also, I’m kind of stubborn about doing things myself. I should probably get over myself and take the offered assistance in really bad weather , but I keep imagining I’d wait too long.

I haven’t heard of skimming software on pumps, but I’ve heard of physical skimmers .

The only times I seem to get skimmed are when I have to send a card off with waitstaff (or places like Target that had massive skimming problems and they replaced all cards ever used there ). M y Chase cards have always been magnets for it and the metal ones are even worse.

I did this once.

I walked a mile in full pirate biker leather picking up random 24oz IceHouse cans, 16oz corona bottles, etc.. Looking for something I could fill up just to get me and the bike back to the station to fill up.

It must have looked like the local YMCA adopted a highway.

I ended up buying one of those Arizona iced tea bottles with the big mouth and did the same thing as our featured gentleman.

I was not paying $20 for a 1 gallon can I didn’t need.
