"Chariotoflove" (chariotoflove)

Put on the radio on my drive to work. Like SavetheIntegras, I heard my first Christmas song, “Let It Snow”. STAR 102.9 just went in to its 24/7 Christmas music period.
The politicians talk about healthcare, jobs, environment, foreign policy...why won’t anyone pass a federal law against playing Christmas music until after Thanksgiving? They’d get my vote.

Any time someone suggests that, people get upset about the “War on Christmas” and totally forget about Linus’ speech about Christmas from Merry Christmas, Charlie Brown .

It's 2018. If you're listening to any music other than what you actually want to hear, you're doing it wrong.

And I’m very pro-Christmas celebration, too. But this...
Also, I still get choked up at Linus’s speech.

Yeah, yeah, I know. And I stream my Pandora channels in the car like everyone else. But there’s still something different about just flipping on the radio and spinning the music wheel to see what you get.

This.
Who was it, Baileys? Some booze company started running “holiday season” commercials after Labor Day . Walmart & Home Depot had their Christmas decorations out and the Halloween stuff back in clearance round about October 20th. I went to get some Halloween scratch-off tickets for my nephew (and myself) the week before, they’d already switched out to Christmas.
Fuck. That. Noise.

Now just imagine if you worked in a store that started playing Christmas music now. I used to work for a retail company but I didn’t normally work in the stores. If I had to spend any time in one during the Christmas season the music it drove me nuts, and that was just a few hours.

Christmas music is the worst mainstream music. The worst part is that it is the same music every year for 2 months. Listen to the same short playlist for 5 days and tell me you like any of the songs.

I opt for satellite radio for that. If you can avoid paying full price (and you always can), it’s a great way to hear music that you are actually interested in. Plus, over 50% of fm radio is just car dealership commercials.
I hate Christmas music outside of the week of Christmas, but hearing the same dozen songs on modern rock radio isn’t much better. I don’t particularly like Staind, so why am I listening to “Outside” for the 800th time anyway?
Life is too short to listen to music that you don't like.

I dunno, it probably would have fit in okay. That was the decade in which “Napoleon XIV” released They’re Coming To Take Me Away , which had the whole single repeated backwards on the B-side, and the decade that featured a lot of Zappa weirdness and Trout Mask Replica.
What I’m saying is, it might not have found it onto the airwaves, but music was so weird already that goring of sacred cows only sort of would raise eyebrows.
That was the decade Pink Floyd’s
Arnold Layne
was a hit, and Arthur Brown’s
Fire
were both big hits
.
If screaming “I AM THE GOD OF HELLFIRE!” and singing about a cross-dressing klepto weren’t enough to freak the squares I’m not sure what would be.

But it’s not just freaking out the establishment. At least in the earlier part of the decade, weren’t people actually afraid that nuclear war was imminent? People tend to have a hard time laughing at something that hits close to home. If ( tragedy) + ( time) = ( comedy) , then time is a really important part of the equation.

I work part time at an outdoor place. Last year someone came in 2 week before thanksgiving and asked if we had any trees. People complain that tree don’t last. Well yeah up till the 90s they weren’t delivered until the second week of December. Now they’re practically sold out then.
I know someone who already put up thier artificial tree. I kid you not.

We’ve been z00 members for the last 10 years or so. They have a custom animal song playing on the loud speakers on constant loop at the front entrance. Same song for all those years. All day. Every day. I’ m amazed I haven’t yet heard of an active shooter situation at the zoo because some employee cracked.

Growing up, we always went to Watts Christmas Tree farm...but not until December. They had reindeer and a gift shop with cool trains. Every year, we kids each got to pick one special ornament from the shop for that year. When I moved out, my mom gave mine to me. Now they’re on my own family tree. This is what traditions are made of, not maudlin trappings and naked consumerism two months in advance .
We put the tree in water in the shed until it was time to put it up. Those things don’t last as long as people think.

That’s a fair point, but there are lots good free options too, provided that you have a smartphone. Pandora is 100% free if you don’t mind the occasional commercial (as opposed to the constant commercials on radio). And watching a single 15 second ad gives you 30 minutes of commercial free listening to the album of your choice.

The worst part is that the stores were forced to use a country station for their Christmas music and it played The Christmas Shoes every 15 minutes. That song made me want to take a drill to my skull. Merry Christmas everybody! Here’s the most depressing song ever written!!

And there were in the same countr y shepherds abiding in the field, keeping watch over their flock by night. And, lo, the angel of the Lord came upon them, and the glory of the Lord shone round about them: and they were sore afraid. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.
And thi
s shall be a sign unto you; Ye shall find the babe wrapped in swaddling clothes, lying in a manger. And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men.

If that’s your choice, then enjoy the radio or any tapes/CDs that you might have. I suppose am/fm is the only true free option.
I pretty much exclusively use kinja on my smartphone, so I apologize for occasionally making the assumption that everyone else here also has a smartphone.
And I'll add that satellite radio is not worth the full price tag, but for $5 a month I'm a happy customer.

The most interesting thing to me about that verse is how shepherds used to have to actually watch their flocks at night in Israel. Humans have since managed to drive, or nearly drive, all the large predatory mammals into extinction there. They even lost the sheep mentioned in that verse for a few thousand years.
Maybe they should have paid more attention to that instead of trumpet playing angels.
