Note to self: never try reading a 500 page architectural drawing package all at once. I did that, yesterday. >100mil project the company’s involved in a small corner of . Eyes and brain have not recovered.

T here are only 20 sheets you need to pay attention to, the rest are just standard details aka filler so the architect feels like they contributed to the project.

Yeah, but get this: our spec for what we suggested was minimal enough in information that got to me that I wasn’t even aware what floor our thing was going to be on. I had to go searching through the cruft for it. Once I had, some of the relevant details were shuffled around or not in the order you’d think, and stuff related to the project actually ended up involving more than 30 of those pages.

I had to review the piping info, the AHU mechanical info, the isometric ducting view, the other ducting than our project, the lighting, the wiring, the power runs, the ceiling structure, the penthouse level structure, the fire alarm and suppression locations, the penthouse floor, the level 3 floor....

All so I can have some idea of how screwed up things will be if we insist on doing things right rather than how the architect wants them - and those things are very, very different.

Imagine, if you will, that the architect wants a chilled room (35F!) operated by a conditioner that is 60 feet away and up a level, and we’ve got to find a way to cut through the mare’s nest and say “Uh, no”. They are showing trade HVAC ducting over that length, with a “just wrap it, brah”, and supposing so far as to dictate (based on that), a giant mass of mating anacondas of ducting over the rooms. Not any *less* bulky than the “put conditioner *at* the room” plan.

I can see the twitch you are developing go full blown by about the tenth set of plans.

Build per plan, when they see it’s total shit, then it’s change order time.

There are some good architects out there I’m sure. I just haven’t met them yet.

Was it a .pdf? I get these 300- 500 page .pdfs all the time. Finding stuff in one of those compares to finding stuff in a printed plan as copying a fifty page legal description by hand co mpares with copying the same legal by hand, using your left hand , and with your reading glasses replaced with a really dark pair of non -prescription sunglasses.

Yeah, it was a PDF of 11x17 sized text pages, and I only have like a 20" work monitor, so I put some miles on the scroll wheel, pg up/dn and arrow keys.
