Second 747 to crash there, I guess technically a runway excursion, but quite a serious one (all gear gone and two engines ripped off and a substantial bend that the paintless dent guy probably won’t be able to fix). Four crew taken to hospital with minor injuries. This one went off the second runway, which is only 7,700 ft, which depending on load might explain the situation. A MK Airlines 747-200F went off the main runway (which is 10,500 ft) in 2004, with all lost.

That’s quite a fuck up.

I bet they total this jet, looks like the air frame is compromised around the mid section.

I think the real question is do they bother dismantling it for scrap or do they just drag it off to a corner and hope no one calls too much attention to it. Because it sure isn’t flying out to a dismantler.

It’s good that everyone is safe, but I think the ambulance probably made a detour for a 3 pack of clean Stanfields (yep, the airport is named after an underwear magnate turned politician) .

They will break it up onsite - at least that’s what they did when the AC A320 landed short a few years ago.

It’s looking good for a 747 becomes a house project.

I don’t know, I think I’d want my 747 house to have more windows, and maybe a bigger top floor? I guess you can always customize.

Probably pull it off to the side and use it for fire department training once they’ve scrounged all usable parts (mostly avionics, although on a -200 the market isn’t all that big any more).

We had a fire at LAX that totalled out a 767-200ER a few years back. They pulled everything of value, and during a few days when I was on vacation the rest of the aircraft disappeared. It doesn’t take much to break these things down and haul away the chunks.

An older aircraft like this is going to be flown until it’s time for heavy maintenance like a C or D check. When the value of the aircraft is less than the cost of a mtc check and it’s fully depreciated it becomes beer cans.

I remember about 20 years ago there was an early L-1011 available for the price of a small house in my old SoCal  neighborhood, about $650K. Between the ADs on the engines (with no parts available) and an upcoming heavy check, this thing had mere months to live. One Hajj season and it was scrap.

It’s a -400F, so I bet they will strip it, there’s still some value in those. But yeah, there’s a fairly big maintenance/airframe operation at the airport , they won’t have any problem salvaging and removing the carcass in a week or two .

I loved L1011s, they were such cool airplanes, but they did require lots of care and feeding. Doesn’t surprise me that a) it was cheap and b) it was scrapped quickly.

Loved the L-1011, it was very advanced for its time. The Rolls RB211 was not quite ready for prime time though. Probably why this one was carrying a spare. /s

It fit 30 (and looks like there is still plenty of room for motorcycles as well)

It’s a little self-deprecating play on words based on a oft-quoted line from Shakespeare’s Macbeth : “ A tale told by an idiot, full of sound and fury, signifying nothing.” I just changed the line about sound and fury to Gran Fury to give it an automotive theme and to tie in with the Mopars my dad drove in the late ‘60s/early ‘70s.

It’s probably a bit of a stretch for a username but, well, whatever...
