A friend of mine is turning 20 and she’s almost graduated as a lawyer. I wanted to gift her two books that I feel are very relevant to her profession, thoughts?
I want to give her these books because, well, To Kill a Mockingbird is very inspiring for lawyers, and Go Set A Watchman sort of destroys the notion that Atticus was “good enough”
I want to tell her that sometimes things go beyond the courthouse and she needs to be weary of that. Obviously in a respectful way...

Go S et a W atchman bothers me a bit in the sense that it seems like people were exploiting Lee after her mind had gone. I don’t think we have a very good sense of how much of it is actually her book.
I’m not sure how much that has to do with its quality as a gift though.

I’ve not read it, but I have similar concerns based on what little I heard about it. I wish Lee had been able to provide context for the novel .

My understanding is that she originally wrote GSAW and left it half way, instead wrote TKAM

ooo... 2 books i still need to read... i was doing allright getting through my list of must read literature... till i hit a tale of two cities.... that book was a pain in the arse to read and understand.... kinda put me off old books for a while
and i have no idea if they make for a good gift

Well, I want it to be mostly a symbol that A tticus was flawed because he was short sighted at times. It’s a plead for her to be open minded; she attends the most prestigious law school here, so no matter what she choses with her career, she’s going to be very powerful.

I thought about giving her more things to read, but given she has to re-read the whole Mexico City law code cus it changed last month, I don’t want to overwhelm her.
I thought about giving her some US cases, like FCC v Pacifica and Bush V Gore.

Dumb question - but where can one be almost done with law school at the age of 20? In the US most law school grads are at least 24-25

She entered at 17, law-school here is 4-5 years depending on how heavyhanded your scheduling is . Plus she’s already an intern at a prestigious law-firm .

yeah... his stuff is hard to read... but a tale of two cities really made me work for it... that books bloody hard to follow
