...please vote. It matters. And chances are your polling place isn’t far from home and it won’t take that long, so don’t make any excuses.

Pro-tip:

Do a mail-in ballot if you can, it’s amazing to be able to vote on the couch in your PJs with enough time to actually research every name on the ballot.

“ And chances are your polling place isn’t far from home and it won’t take that long”

This statement is  not endorsed by the residents of Arizona.

Why everyone doesn’t do mail in ballots is beyond me. They are amazing.

But I’ve spent all my time deciding who to vote for on Dancing With The Stars. How can I vote in this election when all I know is whether someone has an R or a D after their name?

Honest question ( After having this discussion with a friend at work ) :

Where does one find actual info on candidates instead of one party slandering another to get actual info to be a truly informed voter?

Seems to me anything one can find anymore is just one person slandering another, it’s pretty much their campaign........

Unless of course you’re going to vote for the wrong people, then you should not vote, and need to reconsider your life choices that brought you to t his point.

I used to be able to walk 800' ( mapped it, so I guess another 100' including my driveway ) to vote. It was glorious. No line, no parking, no driving, no problem.

It was a sad day when they retired that fire station, although I do appreciate the dramatic reduction in 2am fire engines racing by my house.

Their websites are (sometimes? often?) more substantive than their ads and more focused on the positives of the candidate vs negatives of the opponent.

Plus local news.

You can find databases of their voting record , but as m y dad pointed out when I talked to him decades ago about this problem, understanding the bill and knowing the context of a yes or no vote is more useful but much much harder .

In my case it’s easy: since one party sold its soul to the devil, I can vote for the other (plus a few libertarian candidates) and be done.

Your vote matters. Unless your district has been gerrymandered to ensure that it doesn’t.

Well, yeah, being a productive citizen involves a lot more than just voting. If you’re only plugged into what’s going on in your community around election time, voting is kind of pointless. Might as well just flip a coin. Political campaigns are conducted in order to sell a product , not to educate the populace.

Your local paper probably published a voting guide. Of course new sources having varying levels of bias themselves, and these things often lean towards publishing statements from the candidates rather than objectively evaluating them, but still better than nothing.

I usually google “[candidate] on the issues”. There’s a site called ontheissues.org that tries to get as much factual information on candidates as possible from current views to voting history.

IMO, voting for one simply because of party is not helping us any........

I don’t see a reasonable alternative. I have my share of philosophical agreements with the GOP’s platform, but every single political decision they make these days violates my idea of what being an American means . I cannot in good conscience vote for anyone who carries their banner.

Reasonable IMO, is gathering information about all parties and voting for the person who is going to best suit your needs, regardless of which party they carry.

Way left field p ersonal opinion ( Puts on tinfoil hat ) : Party lines are a big issue in this country and voting is just the Govt’s way to keep people thinking they actually have a say.........

Except even then it does. Because if you show up and vote the vote gets counted even if the result is rigged to go the other way. And if enough people show up and vote the gerrymandered balance can be upset.

Trust that the ballot will be counted, probably. That’s why I generally don’t.

That looks almost reasonable (I’m sure it’s not). My current district is too bad, but check out my previous district, TX-2 (The colon!):

My district in Austin was a lot more compact, but had these two funny arms reaching in to disenfranchise liberals from San Antonio and Austin:

And while blue states are generally better, they are by no means immune, here’s my district from when I lived in NYC, which was fairly sensible through Manhattan, but then got pretty odd in Brooklyn:
