I finally finished the timing belt change with water pump, power steering pump, and accessory belt changes. On my drive to work there is a hill I usually have to down shift into 1st gear. Today the car went up the hill in 2nd with aplomb! Also it is easier to get moving into 1st from a stop.
The last recorded timing belt change for the car was 59k (miles). This timing belt change 173k.

Changing the timing belt resulted in more power? Had the old one slipped a tooth?

No,
it was in the right position. I was discussing it with a co-worker it is probably less power loss from the new water pump and power steering pump
and idler pulley. The power steering pump seemed on its way to failure so that was probably the biggest gain.

Ah, that makes sense.
