I should be getting billed out on this Cayman GT4 shortly. It has 5200 miles and a 99k MSRP.

5, 200, 000 miles? Damn, someone enjoyed the track time.

How could you forget this car?! For shame...
I want one. Hopefully values on the 1st gen drop when the new ones hit lots, and someone takes really good care of a Sapphire Blue one for me these next 5 years.

They’re retailing used for around MSRP still

Like most GT cars. [weeps]

No, not really. It’s just the GT4. Because “limited production” where “limited” was “as many as Porsche could sell.”
If it wasn’t for the mileage I’d guess this is one of the two manual white GT4's available near me.
Amusingly, the GTS is a bargain. Porsche will give you so much trunk money if you’ll please just take the 2018 manual off their dealer’s hands. Then you can turn around and sell it for more than you paid. (We were talking somewhere around $80k down from $98k, and ‘18s are selling $85k+.)

Your GTS is a truly awesome car, but I wouldn’t put it under the GT heading ( GT2/GT3/GT4). I see it more as an uber-S or a Turbo lite.
The cheapest GT3 on Autotrader is an ‘04 with the fried eggs and 35 k miles for $60 k (original MSRP was $99k). So they do depreciate, but it takes a looong time.
Owning a 997 GT3/GT4/991.2 GT3 manual is definitely on my bucket list.

This is seriously one of the best cars I’ve ever driven. Very digital, but still very involving.

Hearing this makes me wish it was coming to my warehouse :(

I’m talking Cayman GTSes, actually, there. Do not ask about 997.2 GTS prices. (Yes, they just went up again, simply by mentioning them.) I wish I could have gotten that kind of trunk money for mine.
With the Caymans, it’s totally different. The 982-series GTS actually
significantly
outperforms the 981-series GT4. Both in power and handling. 981-series GT4 vs GTS, it’s literally the same shit as the 997.2. The 981-series was the last with the non-turbo flat 6. But the new ‘19 718 GT4 gets a detuned 911 GT3 flat-6
engine, which is likely to crash 981 GT4 prices because it destroys their cachet
and
just laughs at their performance.

I would be very, very happy with a Cayman GTS, but I feel strongly that I want my first Porsche to be naturally aspirated, and I don’t see me spending more than $50-60k when I finally do pull the trigger (like I said - years in the future).
The GT4 price crash is what I’m waiting for! =)

Just keep buying them until one eventually does haha

You would be tremendously unhappy if you have any taste in steering, but I am admittedly, extremely biased by ownership of a 12:1 non-variable Saginaw power rack. Nothing feels half as good to me as that setup, because frankly, nothing is half as good as that rack.
Honestly, at that budget, you can easily get an older Cayman. The resale on 981 and earlier flat-6 cars is just hilariously bad. Admittedly because they have nothing but self-grenading engines. But even the ones where it’s just the IMS and not the cylinder fracturing are stupid cheap. Leaves you PLENTY to bump the engine power and put in a better suspension.
I mean hell, you can easily find a Cayman S with low miles for under $30k. There’s a nice blue one near me with 22k on the clock I keep being tempted by at $28k before negotiating.

Shit the other two are asking so far above MMR its insane

The market for those cars is insane. I hope they make a new one and everyone calms TF down. I need them to actually drop in price or find a hail damaged one lol

How?! The GT4 is one of my dream cars. Some as low as $70k...
![]() 11/06/2018 at 11:51 |

The older Cayman S may very well be my first Porsche. I should be able to have one for $20k by the time I’m ready for a 2-seater!

Dude, are you kidding me? You can get one for $20k NOW. Not “later” not “tomorrow” not “in a year” not “last week” but RIGHT. FUCKING. NOW.

That ‘09 is really tempting... They’d solved all the major issues by then, right?
But PDK and lots of miles, so no.
![]() 11/06/2018 at 12:19 |

Hahaha NOPE! Any Cayman with a flat-6 has IMS issues. But they’re generally addressable with the careful application of funds, and once done, the motor is generally dead reliable.

1. Direct Injection engine on the newer cars meaning more torque and power.
2. Both the S and Base Gen 2 cars have 5 oil pumps. (Much more useful for someone planning to track the cars, but a good benefit even for those who don’t)
3. Ventilation is better in the engine box and the power steering overheating issue has been resolved.
4. The suspension on Gen 2 cars is generally considered to offer a little more comfort without handling trade-off.
5. There is no Intermediate Shaft Bearing on the engines in the 987.2 models, so there is 0% chance of an IMS bearing grenading the engine
6. Electronics inside the car are updated. You get hands-free phone and better navigation etc.
