159k HARD miles.  259k is easily believable.

I buy that mileage it is in Wisconsin there are no rust holes the size of toddlers in the bed which I would expect on a truck with 150,000 + miles

The interior doesn’t look like 59k to me.

That truck has more rust than my ‘93 with 240, 000+

Those would have had to be THE hardest 59,000 miles if that’s the case. It’s not just the exterior, it’s the interior too.

I looked at a 115,000 mile Jeep Cherokee yesterday who’s interior was twice as bad, was the owner a Smoker? that chews up an interior very fast.

“Very minor rust”

On every surface.  It’s very possible it only has 59k miles, because it spent a lot of time in a damp field.

Yeah - in most cases, the interior is a better indicator of mileage than the exterior is.

That interior is *worn out*. From asses in seats. And that’s just not 59k of wear.

And since it’s a 1 owner truck, the only thing that *might* prove the owner a liar is a CarFax.

Smoke gets an interior super dirty - this truck just looks worn. Because it’s had people sitting in it a LOT.

TBH, I think I’d be happier if this truck hat 159k.  If it’s really 59k, it tells me that the owner beat the shit out of it.

It looks pretty clean, the seat foam still has it’s original shape even.  I can’t quite tell the condition of the pedals from the picture, might be something up with the clutch, but brake doesn’t look worn.  The shift ball doesn’t look like it’s 159k of shifting, and it’s pretty rust free for the age.  My truck is 10 years newer and has 180k, it is in much worse shape in regards to interior and rust than this one is.

Being one of these in WI, I believe it.

Source:

Owned an 84 which we acquired with 87k original miles. The interior was in worse shape than this and the exterior would flap in the wind.

These trucks rotted terribly in this area and the seat material tore very easily, especially when it was left sitting.

These truck’s interior was cheap AF. The seats started tearing at very low mileage, especially if they were left sitting in the sun.

Seriously? The interior of my ‘93 with 240,000+ miles looks nearly new, and it definitely has less rust than this. Did the fabric and paint process improve that much in the 10 years between?

Was it really that bad? I currently own a car with double the miles and another one with triple the miles - they both have way nicer interiors than this truck does. And I’ve owned a few cars from this time frame with similar mileages - again, with way nicer interiors.

As I mentioned to the OP, I would actually feel better about buying this truck if it *was* 159k.

It’s not the rust, it’s the seats.  Being from the same part of the country, the rust doesn’t surprise me at any mileage, given that it’s 30 years old.

Maybe it’s 59k if Ford was using some really cheap materials for the seats at the time - which is exactly what Long-Voyager is saying.

It sure wasn’t well cared for if it’s 59k.  I have a 2005 Pathfinder with 170k and the interior is light years better than this truck.

Something about this era of these was horrible. Those before and those after seem fine, it’s just this era.

Ours was acquired from my wife’s dad. He bought it brand new and took excellent care of it. When we got it at 87k the seat had a seat cover to hide the whole driver’s side of the seat being destroyed. The body had so much rust the bedsides literally flapped in the wind and cold air would come in through the cab corners/rockers.

Surprisingly, that truck lasted another 300k before we finally sold it.

From my experience, this truck is in excellent shape for this generation. The vinyl interiors are the only ones that really seemed to hold up, the cloth tore to shreds.

According to my cousin (so take this for what it’s worth, but I actually believe him ), Ford got caught with their pants down during the recession that peaked in ‘83 , and had WAY too much steel sitting on hand. That steel sat around and developed surface rust. When business picked back up, they simply cleaned that steel up and used it.  That was his explanation as to why mid 80's Fords rusted like it was their job.  He had an ‘87 at the time that was mostly rust, and this was in ‘95.

Yours was clearly taken care of, and this one clearly wasn’t.  That’s the big difference here.

That’s interesting - apparently some cost cutting by Ford back then.

Vinyl in older cars usually does hold up better than cloth in my experience, but this is really bad, if the mileage is right.

It’s a RWD truck, so it wasn’t a plow truck, but I actually can believe the mileage.  This was somebody’s around town beater, that they never took care of.

I’m with Long Voyager on this one. Mid 80's Fords rusted like it was their job. I think this one just wasn’t taken care of. Even if the odometer has rolled over, I think a grand is a reasonable asking price. If they RallyMetro wasn’t still going st rong, I’d think about offering him $800 and rallycrossing it.

My grandfather worked at Ford in the 80s, at the Michigan truck plant. He said they’d dipped them in some sort of coating (or acid, I can’t remember), and if they did it on Friday, on Monday they’d come back to a rusted part. I love these Fords, but they dissolve like an aspirin tablet in water. ESPECIALLY the 80-86

Maybe in the lan d of rust free plenty, but no t around here. If he listed this truck for $500, I would seriously consider buying it, and storing it in my buddy’s back yard. I wouldn’t be able to get up to Milwaukee in time for before someon e bought it out from under me though, it’s an hour and a half away after all.

In these parts, a grand is pretty much the bottom for a mechanically solid truck, that isn’t a total rot box. Shortly before I bought my Sierra ( 2006) , I sold a mechanically solid ‘89 S-10 to a buddy of mine for a grand. I honestly could’ve gotten $1200-1300 pretty easily, but he had helped me out a few times, so I gave him the buddy price. He bought it sight unseen for his business. I t was so rusty, every time you shut the tailgate, bits of the bed would sprinkle the ground. It also has four bald mismatched tires, and a cracked windshield. He was happy as could be to find a reliable truck for so little money to use to expand his business . He put a new windshield in, slapped a cheapo set of Kelly tires on it, and ran it for five years before it rusted away out  f rom und er him.

Th is Ferd doesn’t classify as a rot box around these parts. I’d offer $700 if I were in the market, and be willing to meet in the middle. If the bed wasn't smashed, it'd be worth his price. He may we'll get it anyways.

Never knew that...that’s some pretty bad rust for 59,000 miles. I still want to find a RWD truck to have as a dedicated rally vehicle...this would be a good candidate but we are sort of in the middle of changing our garage situation and I would prefer a R anger/S10/Colorado.

I would also prefer a Ranger/S10/Colorado whenever the RallyMetro dies . I’m leaning Ranger, because they have internally lubricated transmissions, and thus can be flat-towed. I know the S-10's can’t be, I’m not sure about the Colorado.  I’d most love a Colorado, if I can find a cheap one.  It’s amazing how roomy the regular cabs are.
