I might be moving out of California (to Texas)
for work without a definite timeline for return. Does anyone know,
if i inform the state of my move,
can re-register my car under it’s original license if it is still with the car after it returns to California
? The idea being I would still register it when I get the Texas so
it would be legal and I can use it. Or s
hould I register my car as non-op with CA DMV to keep it’s
issued plates? They are the 1980s Golden State plates so I really want to keep the car registered with them when/if I move back. Would it be worthwhile to ask CA DMV?

Why would you move back after you have escaped?

Non-op is probably best if another state doesn’t make you surrender plates or title as a requirement. This is a good question. If the plates were older it would be easier.

My girlfriend did something similar but with her personalized plates.
From what I can gather, it depends on the state. When she registered her e30 from new york to california, they made her surrender her plates. But when she did the same in Arizona where we reside now, they did not ask for her plates.
Non-op and storage probably is you’re best bet.

I do not belive CA asks for your plates back if you move out of state. How would they know? Just keep them.

California does not require surrendering my
plates so I would always have them with me, that is not the concern.
I have not found out if they let you re-
register original plates back to the car upon return.

Exactly, it is a 1984 so a few years too new for the Year of Manufacture allowance to run period plates, that cuts off at 1980.

I updated my original post. I would want to register the car for use in the new state (Texas) so I was curious if two registrations would be possible. Also with personalized plates, the state lets those be transferred
and re-registered but I can’t find the same allowance for standard serial issued plates.

Ah not sure. I don’t see why not. I plan on keeping mine once I sell my GTO and buy something else and throw those plates on it.
