I changed my timing belt, now my car sounds like Stuka. I only took it for a short test drive. I had trouble getting enough torque on the crank pulley and I think that is the problem. I bought a tool to try and get the right torque.
After just test starting it I tightened the power steering pump and water pump pulley which improved things.
This was not fun, took many hours, everything seems better except the noise, maybe if it lasts to 240,000 miles I’ll get a new car.

Obvious question alert
: You lined up the timing
marks on the sprockets correctly, yes?

Yes I lined up the timing correctly. It took me many tries, and I checked it many time. I hope to God it is correct. This took so damn long. Also, the noise is not coming from the head.

What car/engine?

I hate when mundane shit goes sideways. I changed the oil in the bike to get it ready for winter storage. it was a bit cold (44°F ,) so I started and let it idle while I geared up. Gently rode off to let it get up to temp. a mile down the road the oil pressure light comes on, so I kill the engine and coast onto a side street. Check it over; no drips, no leaks, everything’s tight. stand it upright and look at the sight glass, nothing. then, slowly, oil appears in it and then finally is between the marks. started back up, no warning light, then gingerly took it back home.
I guess the oil was still cold where it wasn’t draining back down to the sump fast enough.

Refilling the power steering pump was interesting. I overfilled the reservoir and the system was still very underfilled once I started the engine.

Do you mean the timing belt may be to tight? I did have to set the tensioner manually.

Yeah. From my experience, the tighter the belt, the more noise it makes.

I believe the rule is that you be able to twist the longest belt 90 degrees. But do what the manual says.

As terrifying as the thought of loosening the belt is, I’m with k-roll. If its loud/ almost squealing; it's probably more likely too tight(I'm assuming you set the tension). And yes, having the belt too tight can cause longevity issues.

Thank you for your help. You were correct.

Thank you for the help you and K-roll were correct.

I had it too tight. I listened to the detailed instructions on the internet instead of the confusing unclear instructions in the Haynes manual.
