Kinja'd!!!

I put a battery in the Bajaab today. Not surprisingly most of the electrics do not work. But the motor does crank over, and the headlights turn on. But they’re stuck on highbeam and won’t dip. Pulling the blinker stalk to dip did nothing. Or so I thought until I just now remembered...

...the ‘68 has a foot operated dipswitch unlike my ‘69 95 which has a “modern” switch in the blinker stalk. Whoops. I spent all day puzzled by the fact that I couldn’t find the headlight relay in the engine compartment, only to remember it’s in the floor as I lay down to go to sleep.

I have never heard the term “dip” used for turning off the brights in a car. I have just heard low beams and high beams.

I don’t think it’s in common use anymore. Older people use it, probably because in a time when there was less traffic, and less street lighting, the high beams were the “default” and you “dipped” them when you switched to low beams. A lot of old literature also uses this terminology .
