When I worked at a dealership in 2013 we sold a black CSRT4 for 9 grand. It had 84,000 miles at the time I really liked the car and I considered buying it, but I had only had the job for 2 months so taking on a car payment didn’t seem like a good idea.
but maybe it would have because some how these things have retained their value like a Jeep Wrangler. 5 years and 10,000 miles older this car is a grand more than that one sold for! That CALIBER could have been the only smart automotive purchase I’ve ever made.
and this is no fluke either here’s another one listed Private Party for 8k with 122k miles one it
and another at a dealership, this one is a bit cheaper, but has 131 ,ooo miles. 7 grand for a turbocharged PT Cruiser thats 10 years old and has 131 thousand miles on it. thats bonkers!

they aren’t terrible. honest. You cant see how bad the interior is when you’ re focused on watching the boost gauge.

I see one around on my commute occasionally. All I can think when I see it is, “That’s a bold move, Cotton.”
There certainly is a very small, but very passionate cult following for these and the aNgeReY Neon. I’ll never understand it.
My GTI is more than fast enough to cause trouble with the local constabulary, and it’s a fantastic place to sit when just commuting home from a soul-crushing day at work in miserable weather without having to worry about incessant wheelspin because there is an enormous raging elephant under the hood that cannot comprehend driving slowly.

Rarity, I guess? Can’t remember the last tim e I saw one. 10/10 would not buy a 10 year old Dodge from the rust belt at any price.

“7 grand for a turbocharged PT Cruiser thats 10 years old and has 131 thousand miles on it. thats bonkers!”
No. The PT Cruiser was on a different platform and used a Neon-based engine.
The Caliber is on the same basic platform and
same basic engine line that the last Lancer EVO used.
The
2.4L turbo in the Caliber was
conservatively rated at 285HP, while the PT only had 232HP. The Caliber also has
has beefed up brakes and beefed up suspension.
It does 0-60 in the high 5 second range.... about 1 second slower than an EVO in the 0-60 and quarter mile times which is partly or mostly due to the lack of AWD.

Maybe but I also found these 3 for sale in the Minneapolis area, and there’s almost always one for sale in that area if you look for it

As would I. I just wouldn't buy one from the rust belt. I think an SRT Caliber would be a blast!

They were the last time that Mopar gave a shit enough to at least try with a small car, so I guess that’s worth something to someone.

Pretty sure the 2.4L Turbo was shared across all 3 Mopars. The PT got a detuned version. The Caliber’s version a hopped a little more.
Edit: Looks like we’re both wrong. The Caliber’s 2.4L Turbo was a World engine. It was designed by Hyundai as part of the Global Engine Alliance.
Regardless, the Caliber SRT is far more vehicle than people give it credit for.

Full honest opinion:
I don’t see why Mopar gets so much interior hate. This has just as much plastic, but far nicer seats than the majority of new vehicles on the market.

Mitsubishi was part of the alliance at first too.

For me it’s three things
1 so much flat hard plastic. Other cars use plastic sure but these late 2000s Chrysler’s have more, and it’s very low quality plastic to, very easily scratched.
2 the color, some one loved grey plastic. Black or a nice tan I can handle but personally grey always looks cheap.
3 the layout of the gauges, in every single car from this era the gauges look cheap, from the caliber too the 300c.

After looking at a lot of new/newer vehicles, I feel like they all seem cheap.
I miss the days of cloth padded door panels, comfy seats, and simple layouts. Guess that’s why I stick with 90s cars.

Part of the alliance yes, but Hyundai designed the engine, so to me that makes it a Hyundai engine.

Hyundai might have made the basic design, but Chrysler, Hyundai and Mitsubishi all had some input and did some customization with tuning and the cylinder heads if I recall correctly.

Yup...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Global_Engine_Alliance
And here is the derivative of that engine that went into the EVO
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitsubishi_4B1_engine#4B11T
If the Caliber SRT4 had AWD, it could easily have been at least 90% of what the EVO was. I’m guessing the AWD Chrysler was using couldn’t handle that much power.

They should have kept using the AWD system from the early 90s vans. That system had no issue handling 500+hp and could easily be adapted to all the Chrysler transmissions on the era.
It did however require a solid rear axle which is probably why it got dropped.

It’s nothing against Mopars. I just HATE rust. Growing up in Minnesota taught me that trucks just didn’t have cab corners or rear wheel arches and that every bolt removal had to be an epic struggle. After moving south and then west, I’ve seen what rust-free cars can be like and it is good!
