Much as a family carving up a turkey or chicken, this group of surgeons are about to pull something (a collarbone? a cut sternum?) apart as if it is a wishbone . Which is to say, whoever gets the middle section when it’s pulled gets a wish. Old folk tradition thing, which in the context of surgeons ripping apart someone’s chest is totally horrifying.
And hilarious.

Ah; think: wishbone. Got it. I’m kind of old and my brain is kind of dried out.

I didn’t get it either when I first saw it, but in my defense I was probably only like ten. Whichever year it was someone saw fit to give my dad a copy of
Far Side Gallery 5
, which was pretty new at the time.

back when poaching was real big, and there was less of an ability to really stop poachers they would use more than just tusks, and would sell off parts of the elephants and rhinos. the parts that got cut were used in everything from boots to wallets. some of the stuff that got made was kind of tacky at the time (early 80s ), and you would see stuff like the elephant leg trash can, or lamp base, or night stand base. just because they were “exotic” they cost a good bit though, since they were te chnically illegal.......
so G ary is making fun of THAT to say “they stole my leg, to use it for a TRASH can”, when the elephant was getting way better use of it as a leg.......
