Does Indian food use a lot of nuts and peanuts?
Found out I’m gonna have to spend a month there for work pretty soon and I’m proactively trying to figure out how careful I’ll have to be when eating there. Either careful or very careful haha.
Especially since I’m sure people are going to want to show me around.

Not in my experience, but I’ve only eaten Indian food in America.

You’ll have to be careful but so long as you’re staying at reputable hotels you should be able to convey your dietary needs, also absolutely do not eat the street food unless you’re looking to lo se 15 lbs over a day or two.

Sounds like a very good weight loss plan to me.

Not always, but certainly more than American food ( I’m Indian) . If you go to a restaurant specifically ask them if there are nuts in whatever you will eat; no one that I know of has a nut allergy in India so we don’t care about mentioning if something has nuts in it.
Just curious, which part of India are you going to?

Not in my experience (here in the States). That’s more a Thai thing.
Probably should avoid the desserts though - might pop up in those.
Didn’t consider peanut oil, which others mentioned.

No, Indian food isn’t heavy on nuts and peanuts.
However, there may be things that are cooked with or fried in peanut oil. There’s also a few specific curries, dishes and chutneys that are heavy on them.
Another common use is they’re a garnish in curry, rice and desserts, which may not always be easy to see.
The problem I see is that many people don’t know or understand the severity of food allergies, because allergies are not as common in India.
If you go to expensive restaurants, there’s a better chance that the staff is more knowledgeable.
I would recommend you find colleagues that can accompany you to restaurants or recommend you places in general - because thats the best way to find good food. And your colleagues can also communicate in the local language to ensure that there’s no misunderstandings.

I have only eaten Indian food in the US, and it doesn’t seem to use much in the way of nuts. But India is a huge country and the food varies quite a bit by region. I’m sure parts of the country use nuts, but it might be easier for you than, say, China.
I presume you’re allergic and used to taking a lot of precautions already?
I would echo Bloodys advice - which is applicable for everyone.

Pack you epi!
I think you’ll just need to be on top of it, no street food, and make sure your people know the deal.

Several Indian snack foods have peanuts in them. There are some peanut based gravys or dry curries but not overwhelmignly so.
Whatever you do DO NOT drink water from anywhere except one bottled by a reputed brand.
Pack lots of pepto bismol or the equivalent you can get there.

Be on the lookout for sweets anything that may be cream colored with a layer of edible silverfoil, (usually are called peda) is most probably cashew (locally called Kaju). As it is with an international delegation, giving them sweets is pretty customary.
Some of the dishes that you get may be made with peanut oil, I dont know if that matters, but watch out for that.
Chutneys try to avoid, they are mostly coconut or peanut or some combination of. There are a few others that are not as well, make sure you ask.
Like the others have mentioned Some restaurants will add nuts as a garnish to currys, and some currys are made up with crushed nuts. It will always be better to check before.
Im from Bangalore btw, its a great place enjoy your trip.
